Right, so Ive gotten to grips with compression for use with individual sounds, but have experimented and was wondering if anyone takes a whole drum loop for example and puts it through a compressor then tweak the parameters and settings to give the beat whataver character theyre looking for? I tend to use seperate Redrums for each element of the beat in reason, would quite like to put them all through the same compressor after ive done all the bits individually to give the beat a certain feeling....has anyone got any tips on it? or just techniques in general?

good shit... compression has been stated by many big producers that it is key that you use it... obviously theres many bias opinions... but cheers for the feedback cynik...
many times when using loops softwares lke acid... if your using something before hand like cubase or fl... adding compression before hand is a good way to boost and punch the fuck out of drums and bass...
then mixing them down in "acid" or whatever software is that much easier... and you got that punch...

If u want to use compression on a whole break, the magic word is MODERATION and don't use multiband compression unless you really know what u r doing.
Anyway, that's how I'm doing it.Crank up the ratio and turn release and attack all the way down.Set the treshold utill it starts to kick in.Once I got the level of threshold right I turn the ratio down to something more reasonable (3:1 seems to be right on most of the breaks I'm using) and finetune the attack and release.I only allow the snare to go into the red,but in a way that it's not muddying the rest of the break.Apply a cut at 30Hz and another one at about 12-15kHz (depending on the break) and you're ready to go

the eq in reason doesnt have 30hz, is only has the lo-cut at that point, should i just click that
? i tend to drop frequencies at 39 hz for that reason

The low cut also depends on the break,u just have to check how deep the kick goes - it's only about leaving frequency space for the subs.Sometimes applying a low cut at anything below 80 Hz will do if it doesn't alternate the sound of the kick.I tend to stick between 30 -60Hz if I'm using a simple sine sub.
