that's for the outputs,
for inputs, you can group them in a Layer. simply, make a Layer Channle, than select the channles in the step sequencer, the Green lights, Ctr+click them all, and then Set Children.
you need to be a more specfific in your questions.

When you set Children Channels for a Layer, you can combine a certain amount of channels into one.
Channel 1 - -\
Channel 2 - - -> Layer -> Output
Channel 3 - -/
__ Right now I'm in the process of making up a good sig.

Depends on how you use it.
You can use it to layer sounds, so if you want that deep and that sharp kick (or any other sounds) to play together at all times, you put them in a layer, and use the layer in the step sequencer.
Or you can use it to bundle a pack off samples, then use the piano roll in the layer channel to play the different sounds. This can be handy if you prefer to use the piano roll to program drums instead of the step sequencer, but still want to see your entire pattern in a blink of an eye. You need to click split children int he layering menu of the layer channel to use it like this.
