Which tracks do you think are the best reference tracks for producing and mastering? With all DJ's and knowledgeable dnb-addicts who visit this site we should be able to compile a nice list of reference tracks in every sub genre Cool

A reference track is a track that is expertly produced and mastered, it has a very flat frequency response, good phase coherence, mono compatibility and is well compressed. These tracks sound good on every system, from the smallest portable radio to the largest festival PA.
Having a few reference tracks lying around is essential when you are producing, since you can 'reference' your track to it and try to make it sound equally good. If your track sound as good as the reference track (ie not worse, but also not better!!) you can be quite sure it will play back well on every sound system.

Up to now I always use The Prodigy - The Fat Of The Land as reference CD for dnb, but it is not ideal, since it's not really dnb Tongue

i guess the ram camp churn out alot of high quality dubplate's a few come to mind:

origin unknown - believe
ram trilogy - beastman

ed rush &optical's - the shining

but when refering to a track for levels when actually writing a track, it normally ends up being

i use original sin remix of ra or taxman original ninja to compare for loudness if either of theeses tracks dont blow yours out the water then its soundin quite loud. ha ha

I was about to say Breathe from Prodigy, but that's not dnb. But it's the best mastered track I've heard.

From dnb/jungle, Rock It from Sub Focus comes close. Also, Sound Guy from him, as well as Strobe. Duppy man from Chase and Status. These are the first that spring to mind.

for neuro it has to be Noisia n also i really admire Calyx & Teebee - despite the complexity of sounds they still manage to have that lovely sheen to the whole mix, nothing is overpowering, nothing sticks out, just perfect really Big Grin

yeah I agree Calyx and Teebee have set an exemplary sound, but theres different kinds of mixes as far as "neurofunk" sound is concerned they hit the nail on the head

still teebee alone is the best yet for me with the Legacy lp, especially the first track - Tsunami, that has the most detailed sound ever

Honestly I don't have anywhere NEAR a studio set up, so I can't really judge tracks on frequency response and phase coherency etc. I suppose if they sound good on my three inch speakers, they sound good elsewhere? Big Grin

It all depends on what genre you're trying to produce imho. Tbh Noisia - Diplodocus is some of the cleanest production I've come across. Concord Dawn - The Sun, Audio tunes like Exposed and Premonition, Glim hit it right on the head with Bad Company - The Nine, Current Value - Bruja, Sub Focus - Airplane, Donnie Dubson - Lines To Draw, Commix - Pained Smile, Apex - Hench, Apex - By The Way, any Black Sun Empire stuff, Mykra tunes, they're all really quality tunes.. hard to pick just one. Crying

I would suggest a few different tracks, there can be quite a wide aperture for what is a good master.

As mentioned could be good to have 1 for level (one that it loud but still punchy)
a couple for getting the bottom end right.

And remember your own track is going to be unique unto itself, so do not
fear if it's not quite getting to where the ref tracks are.

I have a few ref's of my own, Adam F, a few Photek tunes and a couple of
T-Power tracks.

On second thought, Sub Focus - Rock it and Timewarp (or the whole his album), and you cannot miss the point.

Clean, warm, compressed, dynamic, referential. Everything you can wish for your track.

One up for this one! But offcours it just depends on what kind of sound you want to achieve. Sub Focus' album is awesome when you're trying to achieve that commercial dance sound..

Sub focus is highly produced and has a nice colour to it. Maybe a bit too produced? not quite raw enough for me but there are other tracks for that.
Noisia and Teebee/ Future Prophecies.
