ussally you would master after rendering. do a mix down with about 4 db of headroom then master with multiband compression. most mastering plugins are cpu hogs anyways. and remember to save you mixdown copy just in case you get the track signed. some labels want that copy not the master when the press.

I recommend you Waves plugins and Izotope Ozone .. great for mastering.. but most important thing of all is, that you have to make proper mixdown before using anything, you can just fix minor mistakes in the mix using mastering process, the most important part of the "good sound" is equalising compressing and mixing of instruments right in your project..

I like the hard limiter that comes with Adobe Audition for pumping up the volume...
Other things that aren't hard but very usefull: good EQs!!!

www.waves.com - it's quite expensive though, but if you want to do computer based mastering it's a very good choice.
never heard of the izotope

izotope is real nice but a huge cpu hog. it ussally runs fine by itself in a host program.

I usually use a simple compressor (non multiband) for drumnbaas.
It gives a much more pumpin' fx.
I use 'squeez', the one that comes with 'bias peak'
or 'prosoniq dynasone' (multiband) <<not so good, bad gui
