I've been spending a couple of hours tweaking the server to get faster download times. I installed mod_gzip and tweaked the cache of MySQL.
IMO it's a lot faster now but this is highly subjective since I expect it to be faster
Probably the speed boost is minimal, definitely when you are on broadband. Does anyone else notice a difference? Any modem users perhaps?

Lol. The download was so fast already modem users should be at their max thoughput during the whole download, I don't think this will help them

Lol no the mp3s are already compressed, no use in gzipping them, I mean text downloads from the forum and listen page etc.

gzipping
Check out mod_gzip.
It compresses all text content (html etc) before sending it to the browser.
Some examples:
listen page with 100 entries 90.863 bytes original, 7908 bytes compressed (91% smaller file size)
forum index page 36.280 bytes orig / 5025 compressed (86% smaller)
This should give an enormeous speed boost on modems, especially if they are using quick rendering browsers such as Firefox. The images, audio etc are not gzipped since these are already compressed.
Now (in the daytime, and sober
) I can definitely feel a speed increase even on broadband, especially in large pages such as the listen page with 100 entries. This used to take like a second to load and is now almost instant.
I also did optimalisations on the MySQL cache, but this gives speed increases of like 10 milliseconds on pages with a lot of queries, such as the forum index, not really noticeable, but every bit helps, especially if it becomes faster just by changing some settings

I guess it saves a bit on bandwith too, allthough that wasn't really a problem.

The text only amounts for a small percentage, most is taken up by the mp3's and samples, but I sometimes felt the board was a bit sluggish... not any more

Hmm the server just went down for nearly an hour, if this has anything to do with the tweaks I did I'll have to undo them again cuz this is not acceptable...

I don't see why they would have anything to do with them

Well it's only the second time it went down since I got the server, could have something to do with it...
I changed the work partition of mod_gzip to one with lots of free space, maybe that helps

Logging out works fine for me in firefox, IE and Opera, I'd suggest clearing your cookie cache. I have changed the cookie code several weeks ago and the cookie is now made for a different directory which can cause the log out problem. See this thread for more info.
The server went down for about an hour today, so maybe you were trying to access the forum between 13:45 and 14:35 and did see some of the pages since they were cached in the browser?
Damn I just saw that my mailbox is overflowing with error messages, have to look into that...

Fixed the error messages, made a typo in httpd.conf

It's now at 0.04
Highest I've ever seen is 0.40, typically around 0.19.
Apart from this site I'm only hosting a few small sites such as www.artsoundstudio.be and www.funrun.be which practically don't consume any bandwidth or CPU
