In rex2 files the samples come with information( I'm asuming) that allows the break/loop to be sped up without stretching it. Can this only be used in dr rex, or can I use it in other samplers?

edit by thechronic:
this has been split off from which modern DAW for someone who is used to trackers?

best thing to do with these is to load them up in dr rex.

Add the loop/break pattern to track.

Load up an NN-XT sampler.
Load the same rex file into the NN-XT.
Drag the pattern from the dr rex into the NN-XT note lane.
Delete DR Rex.

It's the best way of controlling rex files as the NN-XT has loads more options than the dr rex.

*forgot to mention that in NN-XT you edit each note individually !

Also if you flip the rack [TAB] you'll see on the back that there are 8 stereo outputs.
And on the front of the rack itself you can set each rex note to only play through a specified audio output meaning you can split say the kick notes into an equalizer & compressor, same for snare - maybe add an rv7000 advanced reverb unit !?

etc ...

If you click the banner in my signature you'll find a refill and other patches I've made for Reason 4 in the PATCHES section.

In the mini Refill which is called 174pack001 you'll find a setup patch I've made for NN-XT which is a setup for what I've basically explained here.
It's called "eZ-DrumQ".

*scrap the bit about what it says for where to get it as it's now on my website instead which can be accessed by the menu up top for samples.
*need to register first mind.

eZ 0ot ! Bigup

I forgot to mention you'll need winRAR to unzip the refill and bonus material from most of my patches.

The instructions for each device/patch/instrument are usually included in the "documentation" folder inside the RAR file.

Also on the site via my banner in the tutorial section is some step by step graphic tutorials we have compliled to help Reason users.

Some more to come in the future when I or the others have some free time.

*most of the tutorials come with example rns/patch files.

2nd that, exactly how I do it

except for the delete teh drrex part, its in fact useful to leave it as you can play with the same loop and as you edit drums in nnxt you can always reflect that in the drrex lane, add / subtract play with fx and pitch, drown it in reverbs, distort, flter and whatnot for intros or fullness of the main loop playing in nnxt etc etc.. lots of possibilities

Well yeah I suppose you don't have to delete it.
You could even make a combi setup from multiple dr rex's and fx units.

Which I've done before to make multiple pitch & octave drops of the same break/loop to be played at the same time.

I was just referring by delete to if you were to only be using it in another editor like the NN-XT for seperating the eQ bands.

eZ.

i always thought the dr rex was alright tbh it does exatcly what u need it to
i use it all the time for my drum loops because a only highpass and eq em as a whole i think 1ce u start processing seperately like that you destroy the relationship of the elements of the break. if i find a good sample in a rex music loop however because they are already sliced for u i tend to use 1 sclice in the nnxt and spread it accross as many keys as i need then dup it for an lfo for a bit of interest. the rex is quality though and good for workflow
keeps everythin running quickly
