that's something very special you got there!!!
Check for wear on the tape heads. If the tape heads are worn you can have them relapped.
Check the type of tubes that are used. It's a good idea to order new tubes
Check if the rubber parts are still ok, if they are not dried out or cracked.
If you see some brown tape residue on the metal parts, clean this with alcohol. Don't clean the rubber parts with alcohol btw.
Check if the motors still work, grease up the moving parts, open it up, clean out the dust, check the insulation on the wires.
BTW please don't think about testing this machine with some old tape that came with it!!! Just buy a couple of new reels, it's not very expensive.
If it still works, can I come over to have a look at it? Plx plx

You will find that tube processing lends a character as will tape compression.
Each compressor/machine will have a different character to it. It is not that 1 bit of tube gear fits all.
However it is often not what is required, the buzz words are "needs some analog warmth" often what on perceives as warmth is not generated through tube equipment, it's a bit of a myth. Analog tape goes a long way to smooth out some rough edges in a mix.
I use tube devices and other analog equipment and it gets used
for specific purposes but I use various methods to inject a warm colour into
a piece of music if required.
