Yeah, I use midi controllers for live sets, Both knob boxes and keyboards.

The kaoss pad isnt a midi controller but only an effects box, a very good one at that, but mainly an effects box. I think that the touchpad can send midi data (although the spec list says different), but not at the same time as effects data. You'd probably have to switch between modes in order to do one or the other, which from my experiance is not ideal.

Many controllers will have different snapshots, meaning that one fader can control a few different parameters, but this does require switching between snapshots in order to do this. Anything which requires you going into menus in order to do is a bad idea in my opinion, its just asking for trouble.

Ive been using one of these for a while now, and its great, really easy to use. and stable too.

Cheep as well.

It also depends on what software your using, some packages have had control surfaces designed specifically for them, theres those cool little boxes for ableton and a few for traktor aswell. (although steer well clear of the beringer one, piece of shit) Im using reaktor live which is cool because since you design the visual interface yourself, Ive mimicked the layout of the UC33 which makes everything really intuitve.

It also depends how much your willing to spend, and what kinda quality you really need. Theres stuff like the kenton control freak live which has high quality sliders but not much else. Its well made but expensive. And theres stuff like the doepfer regalwerk which is awesome, built like a brick shit house, although as far as I know its discontinued so it'd be expensive to get hold of (although I would sell my kidney for one)

Its worth bareing in mind that all the kaoss pad is gonna do is add efects onto your tracks, it is not gonna allow you any real "liveness" More a mix set with an effects box. If on the other hand, your planning to use something like ableton or reaktor for your live sets, then a midi controller would definately be a good idea, even something simple like having a fader for each channel makes such a huge difference. Its sounds a bit wierd, but when using a mouse your only controlling one parameter at a time, controlling 2 at a time makes such a huge difference. And if its the X/Y pad thats a ttracting you to the Kaoss pad, there are some midi controllers which have these included.

The kaoss pad is definately a bad ass piece of kit, but not strictly a midi controller.

Looking forwards to hearing some bad ass live sets now dude!

As Techdiff said, the kaoss pad is indeed an advanced effect box/sampler, with some midi capabilities. I suggest you try to figure out what it is exactly you want to do, then what you can do with the kaoss pad and then see if it is what you need.

Keep in mind that if your pc is powerfull enough, and with the right pure midicontroller, you can probably also use software effects and give them hands-on control. This might be a cheaper option.

Keep in mind that one has only midi connections, for use with a pc a controller with usb connection might be more convenient.

Maybe you can check the b-control series from behringer. Controllers with a lot of functions for reasonable prices

midi controllers:
with faders:
BCF2000
with knobs (probably a good choice for what you want to do):
BCR2000

including audio in/outs:
BCA2000

more aimed at dj's:
BCD2000
