check your audio-settings for "play in background"
no idea about the rewiring-issue tho.

cheers soi. teach me to rtfm
i cant figure out the rewire issue though. basically cubase will let me start and stop etc. but the minute i go to reason the audio stops. and it wont let me start or stop from reason, its as if the transport bar has been disabled. which means i also cant program on the fly in reason whilst listening to it, bit of a nightmare for mixing. the programs work fine by themselves.

check in both cubase and reason if you marked the button "release asio driver in background" which counts for when you're using an asio driver that is (which i presume you do)
make sure that you launch cubase first when working in rewire mode,
but presuming you know that already check the first option
might help you
