Layering one hits (kicks snares, etc) on top of the break to fatten up the kicks, snares, etc. You can also do this, by layering certain breaks, on top of breaks, to get a diff sound.

depending on what style of drum n bass you make it could mean different methods...

personally i make old skool jungle stuff and use a lot of classic samples...
usually i have three different samples going at the same time, for example, the amen, the think break, and circles. (if you're new to the scene then these are really famous drum loops used in a lot of jungle tunes, and the amen is the most famous outta the lot :p)

basic jungle beat example:
id chop up the amen in typical jungle style
chop the think break
and maybe have the circles break running underneath with no chopping...

then make sure they all have a good volume in relation to each other, maybe eq a bit and whack em in the track.

---

im not very familiar with modern dnb, but my understanding of layering for this stuff is:

Say you like the snap of one snare drum, but like the tailing-off of another one, why not use them both hitting at the same time so ya get the best of both worlds? this applies to all drum sounds...

both techniques could be applied to both the new and old skool styles but generally they are each weighted towards their own styles.... however music is no fun if ya dont experiment Wink

That's what Plague Cell is saying; since you make your beats 'from scratch' (which means from individual hit samples instead of loops) you can layer these samples to get a desired sound.

Plague Cell's example is a good one - if you like the 'snap' of a certain snare (maybe an old-school jungle snare) and the 'poof' of another one (for example, an electro snare), you can cause them to play at the same time in a few different ways.

I don't use FL, I use Reason, so I'll explain how you do it in that (I'm sure some of the devices/functions are similar). I like to use the NN-XT sampler to trigger two or three different snare hits with the same key, by placing all of the samples on that key, but it's possible to just play two different triggers with the samples on them, at the same time - this is the way you'd probably do it in FL.

and remember, layering is not strictly vital, if you think you want it then do it, if you dont think it needs it; dont. I sample a lot from records and if hits have been used in publish tunes theres no real reason to layer... always keep the sound you want in mind and dont do things for the sake of it !

Cool

Check the samples section of the forum if you havent already. There are a bunch of different forums out there on the web.
Search Drum n Bass forums, or what ever genre you're interested in.
Free breaks samples things like that

hope this helps.
