Hi,

First I'd like to apologize if this has been beaten to death already (I did some basic searches through the boards; couldn't find a close enough example).

My question is, how can I emulate closely that 'growling', sequenced bass sound? The first examples that come to mind are Illusions and Guerilla Warfare (w/Kontrol) by Calyx (as a matter of fact, a lot of Calyx's work), and Through the Loop and Terminal by Pendulum. It sounds like the bass is split, filtered and distorted, and the filter and distortion are automated rhythmically.

I've looked around online and come across brief snippets here and there, suggesting Access Virus synths are used, or the E-Mu Morpheus (the Morpheus' Z-Plane filtering/synthesis has come up more than once and sounds very interesting), in a lot of these songs. I have a fair amount of experience in Reason (about as long as the program has existed), and recently picked up Ableton Live, though I'm unfamiliar with it. In Reason, I've found a patch that simulates the Z-Plane filter online ('benkeifilter.cmb'; uses the Combinator's control to change attenuation on four different EQs chained together) for the Combinator, that through creative tweaks and addition of distortion within the Combinator, has brought me REALLY REALLY close to that sound.

But I can't perfect it. The distortion never sounds right (I've tried using all sorts of Scream4 parameters and the only thing that seems to come close to the 'growl' is a tube distortion), and it seems almost muddy at times.

To the point: So, I'd REALLY appreciate any help with this. Am I on the right track? How can I emulate this growling bass easier/in higher quality? And lastly, what hardware synth (Access Virus, E-Mu Morpheus, etc.) would be a good purchase if I'm looking for this sound?

Thanks! Cheers,

Zack/Knives

welcome to the site!

I'm becoming more and more saturated by the reasons possibilites of distortion so like you I rewire through ableton and since some two months I regularly use distortion plugins through it. predatohm, izotope trash etc.

as for reason alone. using split signals is the way to go, distorting each in another way

oh and mind sharing that combi patch ? Big Grin

Sure. I searched Google for 'Ben Kei filter Z-Plane' and came across the page I got it from in the first place: HERE. Go there and use your browser's search function for 'Ben Kei', it should find the Combinator patch. It's basically just an insert, the way it's currently wired.

It's basically just four EQs that have parameters controlled by knobs on the Combinator. Unfortunately I have nowhere to host my patch, but I modified this Ben Kei filter to include a Subtractor and Scream4. The Subtractor (obviously it has a patch of its own that I can't remember the parameters to) produces the note, which is split through a splitter into the 4-EQ chain and a small mixer for the 'original'. The 4-EQ chain is sent into another mixer for the 'filtered' signal level ('original' and 'filtered' levels are controlled via a knob on the Combinator), and the 'filtered' mixer goes through a Scream4 with a tube-type distortion. I used the stock control parameters with the Ben Kei filter but made knob 2 control not only the balance between 'original' and 'filtered', but the OSC2 phase difference on the Subtractor - with the patch I was using this added to the growling sound.

Maybe I'm just a perfectionist but I've been working on this sound for weeks and it still isn't close enough for my liking. Can anybody offer any insight into this, especially WRT hardware such artists as Calyx might use to make the effect?

Thanks again.
