well. depending how u use them - minor notes tend to invoke a darker/sombre atmos. try Am, Em and and C together for example. although the combinations are kind of endless.

u play any instruments?

ok check this out for starters. i dont know if u use a midi keyboard but its a good place to at least get an idea even if your only a mouse clicker....

http://www.looknohands.com/chordhouse/piano/

check the scales.
and check the chords.

you will learn in time what chords go together.
one way is to check out something such as guitar or keyboard/piano tablature websites which will have tabs for lots of songs, im not saying copy other people but if you can at least check out songs you know u will eventually figure out what chords/notes go together.

of course there is alternate tunings and thats when things start to get really fucked up, especially when u start getting into drones, and a lot of dnb uses drones

anywayz..

its a difficult one to try an explain, but i always try and figure out what the root note is, and then i build my tunes around that.

major chords tend to be used in more pop music because they often convey a "happier" brighter vibe, minor chords are often used on things a bit more miserable but its all about the progression. mess around, youll soon figure out what doesnt sound right

I wouldn't get too bogged down with the chords when writing dnb, nobody else seems to, just pick a scale you like and try to make all your notes fit that.

I believe the aeolian scale is quite a popular one.

Is the scale the same when speaking about all music. Cause I played bass, and some guitar. So is it the same premise. Power cords and such?

not so much... you play guitar strings in a different way than how piano music is composed which how we all write our music on here, using a pianoroll...

youre playing diff notes on diff strings

where as youre jsut playing diff notes on diff octaves... similar concept,

but most guitars have 20-24 frets and one octave is 12 notes...

so it differes...

a chord is a chord. wether its on a piano or a guitar or a feckin giraffe. as long as they are tuned the same.

as for scales - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scale_(music)

yes, and no... like you cant tune midi information to drop d and play power chords...

and if yo play power chords with bass it sounds like shiat... or just chords in general with bass (reece/hoovers anything without low end)

chords in electronica sound better with just,

piano, strings, organs, any kind of synth as long as its not bassy, atmospheric stuff... all that... i think you hvae an idea

Its a very subjective question really, just because one person thinks a certain chord sounds a certain way doesn't mean everyone else will. The best thing he can do is experiment and decide what chords/scales/progressions evoke what feelings in him.

On a side note, a musician I work with told me this week that songs written in D Major work best when you want to get a girl in your bed Tongue

And he was serious Big Grin
