Hi people, just signed up to the forum. Looks great!

i was basically wondering where the hell to start! I currently mix tunes on vinyl/traktor but want to produce my own DnB.

I dont really kno where to start? All i want to do is actually arrange the drum beats and bass on some kind of program but dont know what program or how.

I have a bit of experience using cubase, logic and some native instrument prgrams.

How do you guys make your drum and bass?

im using reason rewired through cubase.

for an out and out beginner i would recommend reason as i feel its more user friendly than fruity loops. but how much experience with cubase and logic do you have??

if your intent on just using either of those then for beats i would suggest you try out both N.I. battery and spectrasonics stylus.

man id hate to be a beginner again. i dont envy you. theres a lot to choose from these days.

I do have moderate experience with cubase. I know the basics etc. All i want to do is make some really good sounding grimey drum and bass. I can arrange a beat on cubase but dont know how to get any good drum and bass sounds.

I use Fruity Loops 6 for a VSTi host (NI instruments etc.), and I use Acid Pro 6 for mixdowns, and either Wavelab 5 or Sound Forge 8 for mastering. And other than that you will just have to get shit loads of break samples, or make ur own, and your on your way. You will have a good start sample wise, from this sit alone, just search and you shall find. But another thing to remember, I have spun for awhile, and 6 or so months ago, decided to make my own stuff, and it is definetly something that you need to take very seriously unless you are just a master. I thought I could hop on with my DJ'n experience and make a decent tune, but that isnt the case. This is the perfect site for getting some help, others will just crush your outlook on music, but dont take it to heart, it actually helps when people tell you, that you suck.....hint hint they know who they are Big Grin Big Grin Big Grin Big Grin Big Grin Drummer

Also, I cant talk for everyone, but Cubase and Nuendo are two of the most difficult programs for me to work with imo. I would start off with something like AP or Reason like Munki said, I havent checked out Reason but I feel pretty secure with Acid Pro i think it is one of the most user friendly programs there is.

FL Studio would be, actually, ideal for that. Using the Fruity Slicer plugin (comes with the program) it will chop your beats perfectly, and you can manipulate with them as much as you wish.

then check the articles section.

if you cant wait then try using N.I. battery as a vsti within cubase to program some beats. find some drum samples, create a midi track, select battery on the midi track, load some samples - kick, snare, hats etc. and use the drum editor to creat a simple loop. thats one way anywayz. lots of others.

like Reason Big Grin just dont use the presets they suck ass

yeah avoid presets for any of the instruments in reason.. half the fun of producing is tweaking knobs,.... Devil

I have some experience in cubase. So i guess this would be the best place to start makin some beats.

One thing i would like to know though is how to create my own drum sounds, and use them in a drum map. I have a file with a few DnB drum samples on it. Could i splice these up and use em on cubase? if so how?

create your own drum sounds - well you either have to record a kit, or you have to use synthesis. on the other hand you could do what every one else does (mostly) and use samples. either from sample cds, or from other records.

again if you want to use cubase you will either A. have to chop sounds individually and place them where you want them as audio files (waste of time and a long way around things) or B. find a sampler/drum machine that you can trigger samples from. like Native instruments battery for example (its a vsti.) on the other hand you could get reason and use the redrum or the sample players.

@arkitekt - ive changed my minda about refills lately, some are ok, the issue i got is you have to go through so many shit samples just to find a gem.

aaaaaaaaaaaaargh dude.

well if you already know cubase a little then look for Battery and try that route. OR just get demos of all the sequencer programs and see what your comfortable with, actually there u go, do that and be patient and see what u like best.

a refill is a type of file compatible with reason, that holds a bunch of samples usually for the redrum, dr rex, and sample players. some even have presets for the fx and synths.
