Hello guys wonder if anyone can shed any light on this for me.
I have a laptop, it has usb , line in, and mic in but i want to connect my midi keyboard into it and start recording with it. i thought that buying an external soundcard from somewhere would allow my to do this but looking around on ebay and the net all the external soundcards i can see dont have a usb connection i can use.
then i thought i could find a cable that is midi to usb, allowing me to plug my keyboard into an external soundcard that has a usb port, but again all the external cards i can find only have 1 usb connection and its the one used to plug the card into the laptop.
does anyone here know where im going wrong apart from the actual prob;lem of using a laptop, but its my only hope...
can i get my midi keyboard plugged into my laptop through the usb connection?
or do i buy an external soundcard??
please help me if you know
many thanks..

yeah thats it!! but most of the usb cards i can see dont have more than 1 usb connections on them, i've seen a midi to usb connecter costing around £35, but it looks like just a cable..
maybe im overlooking the spec of the usb cards.
i obviously would rather pay more and have better quality sound than just crap sound with my onboard sound.
anyone know of any good places or examples of usb cards with midi?? anyone own one themselves??

wow!! they look like just what i need. The only thing that is confusing me now is when i used to plug my midi keyboard into my game port on my sound card on my pc i had a 'midi' volume control in my mixer setting allowing me to select it when wanting to record and a multi track program would record the input.
how does that work when plugging in a USB device, i mean where in the laptop mixer setting can i see a volume control for USB you know like there is for line in, mic, sw synth, wave etc
it is this part of it that is really confusiong me to have this breifly explained would give me all the info i need to go and make a better choice what with pay day being this coming friday...
thanks munki can you let me know on this point?

mid volume controil??? er. midi is just digital data, no audio. but i think you know that?
the soundcard will probably install a bit of software on your comp so you can monitor the level of input/output. either that or it will have a peak light on the actual card. and at worst youll be able to use your host program (cubase, logic. ableton whatever..) to see the input levels.
it seems to me like youve not used a decent soundcard before. you should just forget the crap basic ones youve had in the past as your "mixer" interface (where u would find line in, mic, sw synth, wave etc) will be of no use once you get a usb card.
basically dont worry about it. the usb card will take care of it, your basically just moving up a level to a better mixing environment.
welcome to the world of asio. oh and say goodbye to latency

mate, thats cleared up alot of uncertainty.. no more latency ey... mmm nice.. and i think between now and friday i'm gonna have a good look round for a usb card with midi connection, the only midi cable i got has a gameport connection at one end so i'll need to buy a new one of those, those links went to some tasty looking boxes, didnt stay long enough to check the prices im at work at the mo.. gonna check properly tonight..
thanks also for clearing up the mis-understanding i had with how i would control the input levels of the usb card, it seems i have been living under a rock for the last 8 years and the best my sound card got was a soundblaster live 5.1
cant wait to get a device that will allow me to record with my midi keyboard again and allow me to have better quality sound when playing music etc from my laptop.. all is not lost it would seem.
thanks munki you been a big help as usual bruv
cheers

theres a bunch of these cards floating around. personally id try an find an m audio one cause then you can always upgrade to pro tools m powered if you feel the need at some point. plus ive never had any issues with any m audio stuff. but edirol is owned by roland so you know your gonna get quality there as well.

well. i dont know if youll get a soundcard and midi on usb for 60£ but hunt around the online shops (sound control, www.gak.co.uk the usuals etc etc) to b honest it sounds like u need to decide between audio or midi. youll get a usb to midi converter for about 30£ .
i would tell you to wait a few weeks until you can afford one of the ones above. i dont think the edirols are very expensive. i know someone who might b able to help you get a deal (wont b great cause theres not much mark up on this sort of thing.) so ill give ya a pm tomorrow.

For just having midi it won't be a problem, If you want to take the opportunity to invest in a good external soundcard at the same time, you will have to pay some more.
check this: http://www.m-audio.com/index.php?do=prod...bmidiinterfaces things like the uno or the midisport 1x1 will be a good solution for you, and will cost some 35£ i guess (quick calculation from us$ to £). If you want a good external soundcard at the same time, count on some 200/300€ or 150-200£

i like the look of the uno and the midisport, especially like the price... to buy one of these would mean i can use it to play vsti's in FL for example??
thats all i really want to do and have been doing so in the past when i had my tower pc, although i would be using the onboard sound provided on my laptop, not such a good thing, but does it mean i can use my vsti's then if i buy an uno or midisport..?
big thanks for all the advice by the way guys, its really appriciated..

Terratec Phase 26 usb has all you need - usb in/outs and it is a usb soundcard.
I have it - serious recommendation.
