I just got this program today, and I am wondering. Do you need an M-Audio or Digidesign sound card in order to use the program? If you know please let me know!

Yes.
you need digidesign hardware to run it : an mbox mbox2 or digi002.
For m-audio cards digidesign made pro-tools m-powered.
If you still want to try pro-tools , you can allways download the free version on the digidesign website.

Protools Free has been discontinued for years. It was a scaled down version of Protools 5.01, and was released more than 6 years ago. It is more like a demo version and is practically unusable since it only supports 8 audio tracks. It only runs on Windows 98/ME and MacOS 9. After a long search I found a link to the free mac version here.
The current version of Protools is 7.1. Since version 7 the program is really nice to use, all the last minor annoyances are gone, but you need powerful hardware to run it (less than 1GB of RAM is not recommended, dual core processor and a fast harddrive are highly recommended).
It runs only on proprietary hardware, but a large range of hardware units are available and even the very cheap options (M-Box and M-Audio soundcards) still sound great. The top of the range HD system is industry standard and has pristine sound quality.
Plugins are in a proprietary format too, so you can't run VSTs or other 'standard' plugins on it. Most of the important plugins are available for it though, and the plugins that are included standard are of very high quality.

M-Audio soundcards. Most recent M-Audio soundcards support the Protools software. They offer soundcards that fits different needs and budgets.
The Protools 7.1 software can be bought seperately for around 270€, and many shops offer discounts or bundle prices when it is bought together with M-Audio hardware.
etc... etc...
