ELO!!

Been a while since I posted anything on this site. Thought Id show you what Ive been up to, (not just hurting in the collar bone and feeling sorry for myself, oh no!)

This isnt like a full on tune or anything, Its more of an experiment with reaktor. Ive been working on a new superduper live tool and this was one of the first tracks I've played through it. Was kinda a mess around but Ive grown quite fond of it. It might be a bit long, soryy, I got a little carried away.

Its pretty different from my normal stuff, throught I'd write something with more melodic elements. Chords n everything!!

All the tweaking and edits are done live, the arangement is done live and effects are done live too.

Anyway heres the track

http://download.yousendit.com/9C50C3AC524CD16C

Not thought of a name for it yet, so any ideas are appreciated.

ENJOY!

Heres a screen grab of my new live setup in case any of you are interested

Hi tech Diff,
this is some really cool shit man!!! I liked it. And a LOT. It kinda reminded me Aphex twin in some parts. Anyway the background pads are really nice, it stick there like an ass on a potty :-D. The synths are cool, there is some sick edditing man. But as u said, its quite long, but I WASNT bored. I didnt mind in this song. The end is a cutted to fast. Some nice atmo ending would be nice. It must have taken some time!!! I def. like the song, keep it commin please.

RESPEKT, cheers

Cheers dude, glad you liked it.

I think the track I only spent a couple of days on and off. The Reaktor thing.... fuck knows. Way too long probably! Its such a distraction too. I'll spend a whole day just pissing around, recording my voice in and fucking it up into a rhythm and recording bass lines etc. Its a good way to come up with some cool ideas but as I said, really distracting.

Its difficult to say just how long Ive been working on it for. Its been an evolution from a ensemble I built years ago on Reaktor 2 and every update Ive been able to do more of what I want. I guess in total, a month SOLID. Worst thing is, there still more I want to do with it!

Glad you liked the tune. As I said, it started off as a piss around (in this live tool) and I ended up using it as an idea for a proper tune. Made some loops, put them back into the live tool and recorded the result. Its really grown on me since. Thats why I thought I share it.

I cant wait to play a set with you all in Belgium. I saw on the Noizheads myspace that your doing a live set at the night in October. Good Luck dude, is it your first? Youve got some storming tunes under your belt so Im sure it'll go well. Try and record it if you can. I wanna hear it.

Cheers for the comments.

this is a little master piece

the way it evolves (and still is) is class

the high bleepy synth tat comes in is a little loud.

LOL old nintendo style synth that comes in @3.00

i like the fast squelshy synth Big Grin

only thing i will say i thin k needs improvement is that it gets a little hectic mix wise near the middle

but thats just being very picky Big Grin

Cheers for all the reviews guys.

@jimmy C. Your right about the mix, it does get a little hectic, thats the problem with doing stuff live, once its recorded thats it, no going back. Still I dont think I'll go back to change it, I think because of that it has a littlemore of a live feel, the more I polished it, the less it would loose the vibe which I liked in the first place. Glad you liked it though, thanks for the comments.

@Billy Dub, Seriously man, I cant wait. Its gonna be wicked to come over. See you soon! Good luck with the one in October.

Sweet song bro, almost got me into a trance there for a sec, was flowting on the clouds for sure, really like the sounds and synths you threw inthere ...

That bassline is so warm and the drums are tight!

That nintendo synth is wicked, reminds me of the young me playing on the Sega 16 bit Big Grin

Love the sphere, you are a master at spheres aren't you ... quality is great!

Yeah believe me, when your goin' live in Belgium, I'm goin' freaky in the techdiff fan frontline! Cool

Cheers dude ...

surprise! straight beats

sweet progression of the melodies, not that fond of soft sound choices for bass and lead but it all fits together nicely.

lol was that a fart passing off as a roll at 4:36 Big Grin

love the switch into the more intense and complex at around the fifth minute. feels like it's all about to collapse but hangs by miniscule threads. the momentum is kept at very high measures.

the vibe is set in the clouds and dreamy which is not something I adore but it's all pulled off efficently.

the mix is allright. on headphones here but everything is heard very clearly

props for the mad skills!

Sweet nintendo-elektro-breakcore Big Grin
I dig the minibreak at 4.53 a lot. Very nice to hear something that is not drum and bass but still is (if you know what I mean) explore the borders.
I'm really curious to know how you did it (how much is loops, how much is life).

Maybe this site needs a member meeting someday. Would be cool.

Im glad that your all likeing this. I wasnt sure what youd all think since its nothing like my usual stuff. Its nice to make a change once in a while you know.

@Pass da J. I cant wait for the Belgium trip. Its gonna be cool to meet everyone over there, I like to put names to faces if you know what I mean.

@Cynik. As I said, its not something I do that often, I also prefer the dirty dark tunes, but I really enjoyed doing something different. Its a good way of getting a perspective on what a dark tune actually is. I wont know what nasty truly is untill I understand nice. (probably doesnt make sense)
The softer bass and synth tones where to compliment the chords which were the original idea from which the rest of the tune evolved. I was pissing around recording midi data with a pad synth and then recording the output to wav, and finally pissing around with the wav, all in this live tool. I came up with a really cool chord progression. I sequenced a cleaner version which is the chords at the begining and it all went from there. I tried to maintain the vibe of those chords by using softer bass n melody sounds. I much prefer dirty synths, but that wouldnt sound right for this tune IMO.

@BattleDrone. Glad you enjoyed it. I know what you mean about it not being DnB, but still being DnB. Its just something a little different I guess. No real drops or build ups like a usual track. I guess its more like an actual song with a sort of verse chorus structure.

As for what I did, its a pretty even mix of the 2.

The main chords and melodies are sequenced and I use keyboard commands to switch from section to section and add any edits.

The drums are made from fairly simple loops which I can do all sorts of live editing with, again with keyboard commands and my midi controller too.

The sub tones are from a synth which I play a keyboard through and record midi data. This then means that the bass line is looped. I've set up a couple buffers which mean that I can record a new bass line while the other is playing (hard to do when you cant hear what your playing! I need a better soundcard so I can set up a seperate headphone output) I can also record this to one of the loop modules in realtime, and edit in the same way as the drums.

The FM/303 type sound is a couple of loops whiich are edited in a similar way to the drums.

As I said, its a little bit of both, but hard to distinguish which, because everything sequenced can be instantly rendered into a wav loop. This can then be edited.

Im sure you can appreciate, this is very difficult to explain without showing.

Either way, Im glad you enjoyed it, this is still a pretty new way of doing stuff live, so Im still trying to improve both my method and the tool itself, (still quite a few bugs in both areas!) I think its gonna take a while to be fully confident doing things this way, but its such a fucking laugh!

Definately up for a member meeting. A massive DnB.be party would be amazing!

I'm thinking the same dude!! makes perfect sense. alternatively it can be said (from a fucked up angle I know) "know your enemy". but balance in knowledge is everything. I'm in a midst of creating a "nice" tune myself

there is a mad random fart sound at 4.36 lol
but the synths and mellowds in this are heaps cool
the drumming arrangment is sweet, but i think the drums sound a bit flat...
the live effects are cool...
keep playing with it

The only question I have about this tune is this: is it coincidental that the build-up is almost exactly the same as Squarepusher's Tundra4 from the Venus No 17 EP? The beginnings of these two tunes seem to be 1:1 similar.

Great track. Lovely stuff. I am really interested in how you used Reaktor to create this in real-time.
