One simple tip: Read this forum untill you can read no more. It helped me a lot.
Forget programs that are dedicated to one style of music, they just let you put together chuncks of music.
If I were you I'd buy the basic version of FL Studio for aroudn €100 it's very ok. There's also atleast one software studio environment which is for free, but i forgot the name, but it's name has been mentioned in a thread concerning the software studio various users on this forum are using to compose. (A little search could do the trick but it's late and I'm tired...
).

I think some1s said this before but i think the best thing to do is download demos of the major software packages (Fruity Loops, Reason, Logic, Cubase, Ableton live just to name a few). when you try them out u'll find 1 that you prefer working with. i jus started out with a copy of Reason and i got used to that but i didnt try any others first. this is ok cos i get on well with it but it means im not used to anything else. anyway once u've found 1 you like you can go out and buy it but it this day and age its possible to get a lot of stuff for free.
hope this helps

Audacity is good? I tried it once and had to quit it because I found it frustrating and simply bad. Did I miss something?
