This is just a question I have been asking myself, and also a few of my trance friends. Is there really a reason to have breakdowns??? My style calls for straight and to the point DnB. I cant get a graspe on the whole breakdown thing, because I think it is kind of reduntant. I am and in your face type of Junglist/Darkstep. Most Ragga Jungle tunes have short breakdowns but they are very short and very reduntant also. Is it only for DJs to spinit correctly or is there some written law about it
Anyones opinions and comments are wanted, because Id like to hear what everyone else thinks

well i dont think they are essential to a tune and it depends on the style, u know the vibe created in the opening moments of a track, i personally like having them but only from a listening aspect, they may serve as dj tools and tunes maybe produced with these things in mind but as for listening to music they work depending on the individual sound of the tune,
a decision only to be one your trak gets off the ground in the studio not before you start producing imo...

I depends what your going for. I think breakdown are pretty vital. I like to think of tunes as storys, a breakdown is like a writters tool to move the story along. Breakdown are a good way of introducing new elements etc into a tune. Its also about getting another drop in. Tunes can work without breakdowns but they can get really annoying since the tune doesnt go anywhere. Its like a story that doesnt really evolve, dull. Unless its super short like a couple of minutes.
I dont think you should go the whoe hog and have trace style 2 minute breakdowns, but I reakon they're pretty important.

i guess u dont have to have a breakdown. but it only really works on very energetic tunes. and then u need a mental build up with a massive drum roll and maybe an 'aeroplane' style portamento on the first drop. i dunno. would get a bit boring without the breaks, isnt that what this was all about in the first place.....

Dunno. Break downs are important for story telling, but you can go without them. Usually djs calculate breakdown times so they can mix the tune in time for when the tune goes straight without a pause, you might miss the mixing moment or the first kick on the 4th lenght bar.
Breakdowns are ok when are followed by a crazy buildup. Pitiful is that in a today's tunes, every breakdown is virtually the same.

I guess there is a skill in a DJ being able to continue a whole set without a breakdown in sight, but I cant really say it appeals to me. I think it stops the set from ever deveolping anywhere. I think that breakdowns really stop everything from becoming incredibly boring.
Id rather see someone play a set where each tune finished and then the next one started rather than someone mixing betwee tune after tune after tune.
Agian it probably depends on your tastes. Whether you like meaningless tunes which are good for nothing other than dancing for hours on end in a drug fueled fit. Or whether you like a set which evolves and changes, takes you somewhere through the music.
Just a matter of taste.

In my opinion there are no breakdowns in any tune
It is only in the head of the producer, I personaly have never took care of the "struckture of the tune" like first drop, second drop, first breakdown etc etc....
It is just a matter of taste and how does the story goes...
Create a sequence... then another... and then try to conect them... so it comes out something called "breakdown"
