Instead of remixing someones tune, I think it could be fun (or funny) to attempt to re-create a well-known drum n bass tune..... not a remix, where you would put your own twist on someone else's tune; but actually trying to duplicate the actual sounds and samples the original producer did on the original tune. I think this could be a good time....
and not necessarily a contest, but just for fun.....
Does anyone else think this would be a good idea? (or just plain dumb?)

If you would have to recreate all sounds from scratch, it would be impossible. If you may sample from the original, it's easy as fuck. Not very exiting if you ask me...

I think it's good to try to figure out a new kind of competition so the idea is not bad at all, I've seen a breakbeat deathmatch on some forum (you get 3 breaks, make a new one out of it) but the competition was not much of a succes.
I think it would be cool to do a competition that doesn't involve extreme time consuming work from the competitors but still results in a nice competion....
Examples:
- Make the coolest bass sound, best results are put into a samplepack for the masses.
- Take a basic Amen break and make your own cool version of it (recreate it, or layer it, eq it, put effects on it, whatever), best results are put into a samplepack for the masses.
- Make a wicked/evil/funky/clownish/dark/rough/... 8-bar snippet of a track.
We should have some trophees for the winners though (T-shirts, vinyl, ???).

It's the fun of competing and maybe being the best.
If you produce a reece or a break for a compo it won't be as much work as a whole tune and the result will be usefull for the other heads who are always looking for good samples.
Most contests give you some crappy sample pack and you'll have to work real hard to create a tune that still sounds below average (because of the crap samples and no VST's) and in the end sounds almost like the other tunes in the competition.
I would do a small job with a lot fo freedom instead.
