I just wanted to know what program everyone thought is the best all around program to use. It seems as though, I am growing above and beyond AP6. It isnt doing everything that I would like to do. And I have been checking out Nuendo, and it seems to me to be the better program between it and Cubase SX. Please let me know what programs you guys think are the best all around. NOT THE PROGRAMS U USE, but the ones that you think are the best by catergory. Ex: Best Slicer, Best Audio Quality, etc, etc.

Much RespekT!

Latest version of Logic on the Mac is the best production software. Protools is the best mixing software.

This is very subjective.

The top (most popular) 3 sequencers are Logic, Cubase, and Reason.
Though I use a Mac, I actually run Cubase. Shocked

Cubase is a nice sequencer IMO. You can slice breaks up using the hitpoint editor (though I prefer just using recycle), and its functionality is very good. Quite stable on my Mac (tho Reaktor loves to crash it Tongue )(mac or PC)

Logic comes with WAYY better plug ins; it comes with a sampler and sculpture seems to be a nice synth. It's also prettier to look at than cubase. It's a bit more expensive than Cubase.I find the VSTs Cubase comes with to be worthless. It's Mac only tho.

Reason is a nice all inclusive package, though you can't edit audio or use VSTS. The NNXT sampler is pretty good, and the subtractor synth is pretty cool. Good deal for the money. Cross platform (mac or PC)

Fruity Loops is another option, but I know nothing about it (other than both Spor and Silentkiller use it)(PC ONLY)

Many big name producers use many of the above, including Reason (see Limewax Q & A), and it's more how good that you are rather than the sequencer.

ABleton Live is a very different type of sequencer you may want to look at as well.

There are also trackers like ReNoise, but they operate very differently.
I suggest downloading demos of each and see which one works best for you. Big Grin

I think you are asking people to rank some things you can't rank really. It's all a matter of taste I guess. Everyone has different expectations towards his virtual studio and a program that is great for one person is a nightmare for others.

I personally like and use FL studio, I think it is very good software, but it took me quite a while to be convinced of it's quality and it is far from perfect.

I also tried Cubase (various versions) and didn't like it, tried Reason and liked it (good stuff, but I don't like the interface at all) and tried Abelton live and did not like it at all. Most of these jugements are completely based on impressions, not on technical qualities.

I have a large background on trackers too but consider their approach to editing and sequencing quite outdated although I haven't seen the latest developments.

I think it's a good idea to try demo versions of some products you find interesting. If you have a god feeling about it within the first couple of hours maybe it's the right software for you.

Ive been using reaktor for years, and I dont thik I can recomend it enough.

Its not gonna be your host sequencer, but it'll do everything else you'd ever need.

I use it for synths, drum machines, beat slicing, granulizing, effects. I also use it for my live sets too.

Because of the way its built, what you can do with it is fairly limitless. It comes with a load of high quality instruments and effects built in, you can download new ones from the user library on the NI website, and you can build your own, either completely from scratch or from building blocks.

The sound quality is top notch and its a really stable programme, both as a VST or in stand alone.

The product support from NI is also brilliant, updates are easily available, and access to the UL and forums is great too.

The only downside is that it can be really CPU hungry, but if youve got a reasonably powerful machine you'll be fine.

Honestly, check it out. Instument building can take a long time to really master, but even if your just using the packaged instruments, theyre are so much more impressive than pretty much any VST Ive ever seen. If you do get it it and need a little help, you can send me a PM if you like. Ive been using reaktor since version 2 so I should be able to help with most things.

Their website is www.Nativeinstruments.com and reaktor will be in the synth line section of the website. Its also worth having a look in the User library to see what other instruments are available (as long as you buy a proper copy!!)

I personally prefer FL Studio - I am working in it for about 4 years, been learning it for some time now, and it is a great program. It has limitations, of course, like the synths are kinda limited (besides Sytrus), but you can use VSTi's, which can be found anywhere even for free.

Dunno. Big Grin

I use REason 3.0.3 and ableton live 5.2

I only use ableton for its awesome elastic audio, 90% of my work is done in reason. I also use ableton for VSTI's (of which i have a large selection)

and Reason....well thats self explainatory....reason is da BOMB! Tongue I think the fexibility of it is unparallelled. I've used a lot of software and reason is so fast for getting ideas out.

As someone else said, this was a very contentious question to begin with and is very subjective.

But thats the combo I use, Reason slaved to ableton (mainly for VSTi usage)

perfectly stable, and both are top notch programs IMHO! Smile

Everything depends on the way you're using whatever you got.For me the perfect combo is Ableton - Cubase - Max/MSP - Reaktor - SoundForge but, to be honest, the only program without any limits is Max/MSP.Any kind of sound processing, slicing etc,any plugin - it can all be built in Max."Learning" Max is a difficult process, but is worth it without a doubt.Do it and you'll be richly rewarded. i cant think in a modular frame of mind.. i know they have ensembles and what not .. but Reaktor is a horrible CPU hog. and i dont have the resources for that one. Big Grin

i dont think the sequencer you use makes that big a difference, FL studio, Reason, Cubase and Logic are all good software options but at the end of the day it depends on how well you know the software and your ability to use it. They all have limits to the amount you can do in them I personally prefer FL Studio as its easy to use and can support VST's (essential because the fruity vst's are shite, with the exception of Sytrus). Pro Tools is the best software in my opinion but that has limits aswell. With a powerful CPU and programs like sound forge, cool edit, reaktor etc, the limits are as good as endless.
