whats the difference between all the different types of keyboard out there? i was thinking of getting a micro-korg, because it looks cool and has got drum pads on it, wasnt too hot on the modulation joystick as opposed to the wheels, but nonetheless....
mainly concerened with the diff. between the analogue modelling synth/vocoder types, and the plain midi controller.
what i want to be able to do is to control modulation on soft synths, and trigger samples etc from the keyboard, not too sure bout more features
cheers

then look for some with more knobs and buttons
I like this one mainly because of the control dome, not too sure if I'll get it though

since it's usb midi controller it surely supports anything programmable into it, like any soft synth or effect.
about that dome, see it in the top left corner>
it basically replaces the joystick.. but you can map anything onto it.. I had a try at it and it's so good that the whole alesis is worth buying just for that

el cheapo kiddie synth
no I don't use a midi controler. I haven't got much use of the keyboard itself and only for knobs and buttons. but even that isn't crucial for me

no I said I'm using a kiddie synth. that was a joke btw
can't go wrong with the microkorg as whoever uses it swears to it. but I don't need it so I won't get it. so I'd go for the alesis instead

dont get confused between these two - the MicroKorg is a Synth plain and simple, it has a matrix style editing system with comprises of four five knobs which control various synth parameters and can also be mapped via MIDI to softsynths etc.
whereas the microKontrol is a dedicated controller with no synth engine. It has more knobs, sliders, and pads than the Microkorg, therefore giving greater control over your software. I would imagine it also comes with templates that map to synths, programs etc.
The choice coems down to whether you want a hardware synth or just a MIDI controller!! usually a synth is good for what it does but isnt always that great for MIDI controlling.
Dont overlook novation stuff though, they have a great range of pure MIDI controllers with lots of asignable knobs etc but They also do the X-station. I very nearly bought one of these myself - it's an amazing MIDI controller but also has novation KS Synth engine aswell.
it's a little bit more pricey but if you've got the money do check it out. They come in various sizes (25, 49, 61 keys). They've also just released the XioSynth which I think maybe a slightly stripped down x-station, which maybe a little cheaper.
