how does everyone try and get their kicks to sound right?

I boost at the low end, roll off the top end, compress em. gives a good result but not exactly where i wanna be with em yet... how much high end do you tend to take off? particular to the sample usually?

it really depends on what kicks you have layered in

i usually have 2 or more layered up
each one with its own characturistics (sp)

one with real deep low end.
one with nice mid rangge and maybe more depends what ur after.

once i have layered them i use an evelope on them to make them fit a bit tighter with one another.

i then cut below say 50-60Hz there is no need for anything below this as thats where you want the sub.

then i boost around the 80-100Hz region (Not too much) to give it some nice thump to it.

then i dip out around the 200-450 range a little with a wide bandwidth to remove a little boxiness and make the low end and higher mid stand out more

then i add a compressor with a ratio between 2.5:1 - 4:1. with a not to fast attack (dont want it to loose that punch now do we) and a quick release.

and there you go thats how i usually do my kicks.

sometimes a layered kick, sometimes not

slight overdrive, it shouldnt be distorted but just a bit crunchier
compress with quite extreme settings to give a punch boost
then eq

btw with cutting at 50-60, when i do that the kicks lose A LOT of power, so i only cut right at the low end, at 39 hz, maybe its just my untrained ears but i cant see how it fucks with the sub that much...

drop your low end at 60-70hz -5db

boost at 120-130 like 3-4db and boost at like 5 k for like 2-3db

and voila

p.s. use good samples! if you use some blah kick this technique wont work and obviously its a lil diff for every sample but this is a general guideline...

yeah it might seam like that but 50-60 Hz is where ur sub should be.

leaving those frequencies in the kick will mean you'll have trouble when tring to mix the sub in.
