in one of my latest songs ive used a lot of distortion on the bassline. it sounds really phat... too phat. after listening to it all the way through a few times my ears hurt, and i wasnt really playing it too loud. ive tried some compression, but im not very familiar with how it works, i didnt get a very good result.
im thinking of the prodigy album AONO, everything is phat and distorted, but not overpowering. thats what im looking to achieve.

I guess you should EQ it a bit, lower some of the frequencies that hurt your ears...

perhaps just reduce the mix of the distortion a bit - sometimes when I use lots of distortion it sounds really good, but then after a while you realise it gets a bit much. Perhaps just add a bit at a time and see how it goes and like Surya said use EQ to shape the sound.

using lfo on distortion mix can produce some good movement on the bass. then you might get in trouble with the levels going up and down so a limiter on top can flatten that
