Free VSTS for Mac:

iKon,
I would suggest Kontakt 2 and Reaktor 5. I have and LOVE both. Albino 2 is held in high regard, and the audio demos sound nice, but I dont have it. Albino 2 also has patches mad by Pendulum if I remember correctly. http://www.kvraudio.com/ is a great source for free VSTs.
Green Oak Crystal is a nice free one, though it's kind of a CPU hog and I havent used it in a while: http://www.greenoak.com/vst.html
Hope this helps.

Albino 2 is great indeed!
got some nice patches by Cosmosis (goa) for Anbino 1 and 2
Vanguard is also very nice, but it's quite trancy
Hypersonic is good too

Free ones - see the suggestions above
Other good ones - you may have to pay for these though
NI Battery (superb drum sampler - I use it for all my beats)
Korg Legacy Collection (three amazing synths)
Cakewalk z3ta (as close to a virus you'll ever get in software)
Spectrasonics stylus (beats), trilogy (bass) & atmosphere (pads)
Kontakt - best sampler on the market
Audiorealism bassline (great tb303 clone)
Novation V-station (unique kinda sound great for pads, arps, bass, leads)
Novation Bassstation (chunky bass aplenty)
Arturia moog modular/minimoogV/prophetV/arp2600V/CS80V (amazing emulations of classic analogs)
NI absynth (great for evolving digital soundscapes - and allsorts of great stuff)
Rob Papen Blue (amazingly deep synth - I haven't had the chance to explore it properly yet though)
thats all I can think of off hand
but remember.....
dont underestimate the power of freeware
