what, you want to synthesize your own drums? good luck, it's gonna be tough
try layering your beats with drum machine samples, I regularly use the roland 909 for example but any decent analog would do. with some compression and eq-ing it can add that extra punch to a washed out sounding beat

I just use the NN-XT in Reason. Thats a multisample-sampler...

so is there not any programs where you can use a standard drum hit, from a drum kit for example, and manipulate it to make it sound like a dnb hit? i think theres somehitng like this on Ableton Live but im new to this program so im not sure.

In my opinion,u just can't beat a combo made out of uTonic 2, Waldorff Attack and Battery 2 or Kontakt 2 for sampling. To my knowledge, there isn't anything like the thing you mentioned in Ableton Live.Once you get the hits ready, from that point everything is about eq,compression and processing to your taste.

Ableton is an awesome program to manipulate sampled beats-basslines. But that is as far as I have gotten with it. It is a good program, but I am all about AcidPro.

I use Ableton mainly for trying out new ideas or doing quick sound sketches, otherwise,it's simplicity is a bit too much for me,so all the hard work is getting done in Cubase.

Man could you explain to me in lamens terms how to lay down a decent track with Cubase. The manual might as well have been in chinese because I only understood some of it, and started to make a track and just lost interest in 5 secs because I couldnt get anything to sound right beat wise. quality is there though!

No I use AcidPro to make every beat that I make from scratch which is most of them. Except for the Amens, but I dice those to death still using AP. I can teach you what I know about manipulating basslines and synths, but then you are gonna have to teach me to EQ them properly
Cause thats the problem I am having

I use a combination of Nuendo with Battery 2 for my beats, I generally put the break straight in the arrange page as a rex and dissolve part, then you move all the parts onto seperate tracks, kick. snare, hats ghosts etc
I have several banks of kicks and snares from battery arranged according to pitch ---12 rows equals twelve pitches!
I use battery because i love the envelope shaping on it, you can get it nice and tight, and if you want to layer hits you can change the attack and release settings so you can have one snare with a nice attack-->--, one with a nice body --<>--and one with a nice tail for example--<--.Make sure you've got the sends going to mono channels!!(17+)
so then i choose a kick and snare sound that fits with the break(s) and that's in key with song i'm writing.
you can get interesting sounds by using intervals between the kick and snare. For example, a snare tuned a tritone higher then the kick drum can add some funk to the beat.
Put an eq on every channel find the extreme peaks and use narrow notches to pull them down, you get heaps more head room!
I route all kicks, all snares to seperate buses, then on to a drum bus with the rest of the things like hats and ghosts.
I like to run individual parts like kicks and snares through some antares tube for a bit of crunch
Add compression, eq and such to taste, i can't really suggest settings beccause it all depends on the drums and sounds you are using
I generally run the compressor in parallel, using an fx send to mix the compressed single back into the dry single, thus you get the best of both worlds.
Use a bit of sonic maximization (i use the bbe sonic maximizer)
and you should start to get some nice drums!

I think he was refering to the sound, not the note key

Here's the long and satisfying way--Either use your ears to tune the drum to the root note (or whatever interval you want) try using a sine wave tuned at whatever pitch you wanna tune to and adjust the pitch of the sample until you don't get any beating (phasing).
here's the quick way----i also use wavelab to determine pitch, select the whole waveform and press p and it will find the pitch for you
i assume battery runs on mac, dunno i'm a pc user, kontakt works very well for drums too, guru is very nice also, like i said, i assume these run on mac!

I made some hit sounds from striking everyday objuects with other objects, and sampled them onto MD
for example, a rolling pin against a large tupperware container, upturned, and placed on a draining board (near a sink) and then doctored it, (eq, etc) using soundforge8.... makes for an awesome kick sound. I have hundreds of real life sampled drum hit sounds, and they sound f**king bonkers
its all about imagination. i'll very rarely use loop samples. much more satisfying to build up beats from scratch.
peace,
THC
Btw I use reason 3.0.3 and ableton live 5.0.2 along with about 200 or so VSTi's, and a novation remote25SL as my controller. I also have a pair of quasimidi Sirius keyboards, and a devilfish modded Roland tb303. I have lots more hardware, but it all gathers dust these days. Alesis Andromeda, yamaha CS1x, Roland vp9000...to name a few..software FTW!

Why is all that hardware gathering dust?? (especially the andromeda !)
just for the convenience of using software? I don't get it..... all those chunky knobs, flashing lights & shiny buttons I wouldn't leave my hardware for software anyday
A little mix of both is all good, but to leave those beasts gathering dust is just criminal
