My laptop is having a real hard time coping with all the channels, audio clips, automation, effects etc that i'm usingin fl studio. I've been told that this is due to there not being enough ram in my laptop. Is this true? If so, how do i get more ram for a laptop? how much does it cost?

It might be due to the amount of RAM in your laptop, or it could be down to your CPU or your soundcard.
How much RAM do you have at the moment?
There are number of things which you might try (if you havent done so already)
You should change the latency settings in the audio devices options, obviously the smaller the better but the bigger the buffer, the easier it is for the laptop to process everything at once.
Its also woth making sure all the effects have smart disable switched on, This will turn off any effects when theyre not being needed. There should be an option to do this in your effects mixer.
I can sympathise. I used to have exactly the same problems with my (really) old desktop PC. It fucked up so much that Id have to select a couple bars in the PL and go through the tune piece by piece. Another thing you can do is to render some of the parts to wav, if you have a synth line for example with loads of effects and shit, render it as a wave file instead since this will ease the load on your CPU, although if you end up doing this for loads of tracks you might have a problem if your hard disc isnt very fast.
Laptop RAM can be expensive, but it depends on what make the laptop is. If youve got a sony Vaio, then be preparted to fork out quite a bit since its exclusive to the make. I ended up spendin about £150 getting my Vaio up to 1 gig!
However if its an older model, have a look on Ebay, A friend of mine got RAM for his G4 powerbook for less than half the retail price.
You should bare in mind that motherboards have a capacity for only so much RAM, modern laptops will sometimes go to 2 gig but normally just 1. If its an older model then it might not even cope with with a gig.
The only other thing Id suggest is to get a decent soundcard. If you're using the built in one, that could be the root of your problem. Its a tough call, it depends on weather you're thinking about getting a newer PC soon or not. If you buy RAM, then you wont be able to fit it to a new computer, but if you buy an external soundcard you'd be able to use it with anything.

cheers,
the smart disable and buffer rate did make some difference but i think im gonna need more ram. yeh its a really old laptop: 480MB RAM, 2.8GHZ CPU. How much extra RAM do you think this could handle?
