ANyone know how to make them? ie the staccato stabs on the upbeats of most reggae and rocksteady tunes. to be honest, im not even sure what real instrument (if any), makes that sound.

So any info - what kind of sound preset to use, what instruments they are in reality, how to make your own using a synth - would be wicked Bigup

Its a guitar normally.

You need an electric guitar, a clean tone (no distortion) and a plectrum.

You need to use the bridge pickup since it has more high end, the bridge pickup is the one furthest from the neck.

The sound comes from the way the chords are fretted or played. Rather than holding the strings down like you would normally, you only have to rest them against the top of the frets. This will mean that you still get the sound of the chord your playing, but no sustain.
The picking motion is like a quick chop across the strings, The base of your hand should rest slightly on the strings to reduce any sustain, and the picking motion should come from your thumb and index finger.

Not really sure of a way you could get that type of sound from a soft synth, maybe if you got a physical modeling synth like steampipe in reaktor you could get close, dunno though.

If you get really desperate though, let me know and I can always record some for you and send it in an email.

cheers for the prompt and detailed reply techdiff. i can't play the guitar but i have one so i might give it a try myself. Bigup

suprises me tho, for some reason i assumed you'd have reggae in some form around a while before electric guitars were commonplace. and i would never have guessed that the little upbeat sounds in tunes by people like phyllis dillon was made by electric guitar. learn something everyday

I think it would be pretty damn tough to reproduce that sound in software.

I've yet to hear any synthesised guitar that sounds good.

sometimes people use a piano or keyboard note (or chord, or watever) with the guitar chord. sounds quite cool

Reggae stabs are also piano driven sometimes, or organ driven, so try those too.
