where can i get good drum samples from, also, some tunes can be physically tiring on the ears to listen to (they can literally hurt the ears a lot) i think its because i tend to raise the eq on hats quite a lot cos i notice that proffesionally made tunes seem to shine a lot more, any tips? i also take out lower frequencies of hats... cheers

You can download millions of samples all over the web, just google a bit (e.g. use "download .wav" as search string or "download drum .wav".
Lots of samplesites offer some free samples as advertisement for their sample CD's, just look onto those sites and check back every once in a while.

You can find a magnificent free set of hihats on the site of hihat manufacturer Zildjian.

For the earkillinghihats: give them a little bit of distortion to get that "shiny edge" and lower the level a bit. Make sure you EQ other instruments a bit down on the high side to leave room in the mix for your hihats.

When i listen to the tunes that ive made on my speakers which i use to produce which i think are good (DM1200 Rolands), they sound up to scratch, but when I compare to a tune from vinyl through my stereo system., this is where i think that my tunes dont have as much high end, maybe its eq, maybe its some other special fx, but it is true that they dont shine as much,.... is that just vinyl or is eq the way forward? bearing in mind what i said about sometimes certain tunes with high eq can be physically exhausting to listen to

I know for sure that the vinyl has lack for lows, it's just like it is without bass or sumthing... I noticed that on many vinyls, especially dnb... I have Tech Itch's Penetration 007 and it definitely lacks bass. Maybe because of that it seems to you that vinyl tracks have high frequencies (too) much.

If it sounds good to you man, do it however you want it. When a sound is rich with high spectrum frequencies (above 15 000 Hz) it is, true, pretty exhausting for listening, as those frequencies are ment for instant precise sounds and not continous listen.

That's why all instruments try to go max. up to 16 000 Hz, for they are not very confortable for listeining above this value.

BTW dunno what's with the vinyl mastering, but it is kinda stupid.

a lot of kick samples tend to have a lot of high frequency content, and compressing does get rid of a little of it, but my kicks never seem to sound quite proffesional, especially out of a stereo. any help? could it be just to do with low quality kick samples? i use the koncept and function reason refill for kick samples mostly
