sry if theres an existing thread, but what are some of your favorite plugins? vst's, Synths especially. im kinda new to writing tunes, and sometimes wonder what other ppl use. I like/use *Absynth, Hydra, MiniMoog and Blue* mostly.
what about you guys?
also, how do some of you achieve nice sub bass? It's one of the hardest things for me to do.... id love some advice....
i use FL6....

Reaktor 5 for teh win!
I guess the easiest way to get some nice sub is to layer a sine wave under your bassline.
If you get your original synth tone, and EQ the really low frequencies out (you might not notice them but they're there) and play the same bass line on a simple sine wave. You might have to try in different octaves to get the best effect.
Thats a simple way to get some low end. Idealy you should be able to acheive a good result with a good EQ. Just remember to cut frequencies rather than boosting them. You'd be suprised at how a little sub can go a long way. Its great to have a rumbling bass line coming out of your Hi Fi speakers, but the louder something is, the flatter the frequency curve, and the more prominent the bass will become. So if you got the same tune played out of a PA, the chances are that the bass will be really over the top and probably damage the speaker cabs which will make you a very unpopular person.
I'd suggest listening to a few of you favourite tunes pretty loud and take any colouration off on the EQ settings on your amp. Listen to how the bass isnt over powering but just keeps the bottom end tight and clean. Try to get the same result.
More often than not you dont want the super low frequencies in your mix anyway. Everything your running, samples, synths, drums etc.. will all contain a certain amount of sub frequencies in their tone. Its when these are all combined that the mix becomes dodgy. You need to try to carefully EQ all of the low stuff out of everything except the bass line so that the only sub comes from the bass and possibly the kick drum. Even then, it may be worth using a master EQ to remove the really really low stuff so that you dont get the effect of a rumble covering up everything else.

What bI find works well for distortion is to use guitar amps and pedals.
Ive got a line 6 pod which works really well for saturated distorted sounds, just playing the synth lione through it and recording the output.
Ive also got a bad ass marshall amp which is great for warm valve distortion. I do the same thing of recording the output since its got a kinda post power amp output so that I can use it as a sort of DI unit. Ive got a 4x12" cab for it too, and I'd love to play synth lines through that turned up loud and mic up the speakers, but I havent got a good enough mic.
I've never used too many vst distortion plugins. In fruity I just use the blood overdrive wityh an EQ and compressor and Im usually prtetty happy with that. Although Ive also got some hyperprism effects which are DX rather than vst but theres a tube/valve emulator and a bitcrusher which I like.
For distorted synth lines, aprt from sending it through an amp head or guitar pre-amp, my favourite way to get distortion is in reaktor. Ive built a filter module with a saturation loop in the resonance section which lets you distort the output of the filter. Sounds nuts since its far more responsive to the cutoff frequency of the synth. If you use a HP filter you get reeces so dirty I'm gurning just thinking about them! For anyone who's got native instruments electronic instruments 1, check out the titan synth since this does the same sort of thing (except you get 2 filters which work in parallel or in series!!!
) If anyone is interested I could send the filter module to you, you'll need reaktor version 5.1 though.
