I sent a demo once. They told me I have undefined music and didn't plan to release it. Undefined = non-comercial, thus crap for labels Big Grin

Hell at least you got a reply. Most of the time you wont get anything.

To be honest just sending demos is a waste of time and money. You're far better of to first get in contact with whoever your planning to send things of to. Getting to know what kind of music they release, and getting to know exactly what they want you to send. Sometimes they'll want a CD, artwork, a letter telling them about you, a photo etc etc. sometimes all they want is a link to some MP3's. But its also worth bareing in mind that whenb you send your demo off its just gonna land at the bottom of a missive pile of discs on some poor guys desk who does nothing but listen to demos all day. And the chances are it'll stay there for months/years/millenia. Your far better off to get them interested in you first. Try and hook up on myspace or even try and get a set on the line-up as some more established artists. You got to build up interest about yourself. Then, if your lucky, the record company will ask you for a demo and it'll get listened to soon, with a much more open opinion. Sure, send demos off, but they have got to be great in order to get any interest. They have to look great, not cliche, the have to sound great, and they have to be original. Sending demos off is only a small part of what it takes to launch yourself into a career. Your best bet might be to make a mix demo of your best tunes and use that to try and get some decent sets. Then if your tunes are good enough, you'll get people asking what they are....and you can slighly say, "well theyre mine actually" . Then everyone will know how greaty your tunes are and offer to release them for you.

All Im saying is, It takes far far more than just sending demos off

yep i agree, you've got to know your market and the interests of the people you want to like your work.

show your intiative by being pro-active and give the people more of a reason than your music to get in contact with you..

techdiffs right in saying that lots of companies/people are more interested in you if you do your own artwork and promotion

remember theres alwayz someone who that little bit more prepared or succesful than you..

never give up.....

Thinking of sending a demo? Do yourself a favour-- print up the nicest, spiffiest, shinyest demo cd you can, bundle it with your press kit thing, and set then set it on fire. You're going to have more fun watching it burn than you will popping it in the mail.

Seriously, if you're not physically putting your demo into the hand of someone who has established that they have an interest in helping you, you're wasting your time. The "traditional" route of cutting a demo and sending it a billion places doesn't work anymore. I might've in the past, but the industry is too bloated now, and the people in charge are too jaded, busy, etc. You're better off going the grass roots route of handing out demos to industry folks you meet face-to-face at events, parties, etc. Even if the person isn't directly involved with signing people to labels, word gets around pretty fast sometimes, and people who know other people are your best bet for getting ahead.

The exception to all of this is emailing an electronic press kit to people. I've seen it work-- just a short letter and a couple of attatched files. A&R types are very short on time, and they tend to lose a lot of stuff in the shuffle, so email's a fantastically simple way to get ahold of them, and trust me, doing things A&R types appreciate will get you ahead faster. Plus, it's damn near free.

Demo cds can do you a lot of good, but you have to know how and when to use them. Otherwise, you're just spinning your wheels. Also: I really dig the suggestion of making a mix set of your own tunes. Props! (I'll have to try it myself)

So stick that in your pipe and smoke it. :-p

Nolites bastardes carborundorum! (don't let the bastards grind you down)

u people still send cds!!!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!!?!?!?!?! Shocked

try aim or yahoo messenger instead. ive had positive responses to a lot of my stuff and im slowly getting there, maybe some of you should try a different approach, for example try selling it to music for media companies or something similar, if your that desperate to get a deal maybe u should try a different style for a change, sometimes you just have to learn when to give up. im not saying abandon what u love but its amazing how some of the trixs u apply to your dnb transfer over to other styles and create more interesting results just cause u dont follow the "rules" for that style of music.

Come on children, play nice.

Fair enough that people get ancy about trying to get signed, considering that its the main ambition of nearly any musician its understandable. But if we're all going to be totaly frank, all the advice on here is neither here nor there. Everyone has got suggestions which is fair enough, but NONE of us are actually signed, so its not really worth arguing about who is right or wrong, especially considering that:

A) There isnt and never will be a sure fire way of getting signed.

and

B) Even if there was, no one here know it otherwise they would be signed, right?

I do think that the best bet is to do everything that you can, theres that old saying that" if a man is not succesful it's because he doesnt truly want to be" Basically if you really want something, you'll do everything you possibly can to acheive it.
Maybe its worth doing everything suggested on this thread X10. Just really go for it.

the fact that TechDiff hasn't got anything signed yet (!) is maybe the only thing that brings me down when I consider of sending demos myself.

as far as the format is concerned - yeah, it seems a lot of labels nowadays are very reachable through myspace, AOL, various forums etc etc. so sending mp3's / links to them is probably way more convenient than the old skool cd mailing.

Getting signed is fucking cake, these days. Seriously. There are so many labels, a lot of them new, all eager to get talent under their wings....... the problem is that 99% of the labels out there are run by schmucks. If you want to make your way, don't wait for some label to come and lead you by the hand to success-- it most likely won't happen, so do it yourself instead. That way, when you + do + achieve something, you've really earned it... a certain amount of credibility and respect comes from that, too.

If you really + must + hook up with a label, watch your back. It's easier than ever to get ripped off, burned, or just plain used.

labels want to hear something new , some originality , but goddamn thats tough...
anyway dont wait to long with sending of your shit or you wont be original anymore (thats my point of view)

fact: TOO MUCH PRODUCERS / TOO MANY LABELS
fact: Labels want to rippof , so be smart and get some advice first (its all about the money $$$ ching ching)
fact: maybe we should collaborate some more instead of the individuality of the producer , remember its us against the world Tongue
fact: Be Original or stop it ...or learn it
fact: Nowadays DJ's think they need to produce too , NO!

fiction: Im a liar

everything i wrote is based on my opinion , i dont point labels with my finger and i dont guilt anyone.

cheerz
