okay, im currently using sonic foundry vegas pro v4.5 ( old, old, old program!!) to record my guitar tunes. for years it has done the basic job of allowing me to multi track guitar or midi recordings alongside a wav file(drums i make in FL) and make a composition.
but lately it has been fucking me off and i know its something simple but my knowledge of music terms for these things is quite limited, and i have been going mad searching the web for any advice or comments that will sort this out for me..
so i turn to my crew at dnb.be, maybe someone here can help me out.
Here is the problem..:
i'll load up a wav file(drums) as usual..
i'll then record a simple section of chords on the guitar alongside that, as im recording -everything sounds correct. When i play back the recording,- after 20 odd seconds the guitar recording starts to speed up and go out of sync to the drumtrack..
to make sure it wasnt jus something to do with the drums i repeated the process without the drum track then recorded more guitar on top but still had the same problem of each recording going out of time/sync to one another...
i have loosly played around with settings, i.e buffering, routing, with no real clue as to what they really mean, i even re-installed Vegas to see if the problem went away but it didnt..
does anyone know whats going wrong here, if so could you be kind enough to put my prediciment into easy-to-understand terms for me??
i know jus about no-one will be using this program anymore, but i think the problem i'm having is more general to do with buffering and routing..
my soundcard is an creative audigy platinum, so im pretty sure its not due to poor soundcard, and my RAM, HDD space, and processor are also more than capable of doing what i want it to do.
pls pls pls shed a 'lil light on the situation for me, techdiff??, maudibb?? chron??
anyone??

do you defragment your hard dsik(s) regularly? try it if you havent
start -> all programs -> accessories -> disk defragmenter
fragmentation is when your drive gets filled with little bits of data all over the place (always happens when you write & delete often), creating very small pieces of free space. when you record a clip or move a big file on it, if the drive is heavily fragmented, the head would have to jump wildly all over the place because it must avoid these little chunks of files. thats where you can loose the little bits of a recording which may not be heard as faulty but it's enough for it to go out of sync

yeah that sounds like a very good explanation mate.. gonna defrag now anywayz cos now you mention it theres no harm in doing so although it means defragging an 80gig disk, takes forever maybe a day and a night!!
would of done this by now but when using all other applications including FL and editing software there has been no problems at all.
might install acid pro, coz that is multi track recording,
but anywyz thanks for gettin back to me on this one cynik
Cheers

Cynik has thrown a reason which is most plausible. I support it too.
If you need a really good defragmenter, check this one: www.diskeeper.com
BTW try releasing some space and increasing the buffer.
PS You have 80GB disk and only 1 partition?! Go and immediately separate that disk on at least 2 partitions!!! Here is a free partition manager:

I have a 80 gig disk to, and I have two partitions, one system and one ordinary. The system partition I never use - It's pre-installed when you get that kind of computer. My question is should I use this system-partition for certain kinds of things like install all programs to it? Never bothered that kind of things.

You could try audacity too, it is a more modern program, it is multitrack capable, it can record, loop, playback, edit... almost anything you want, and it's completely free!
