I need to compress my drum track and add some fx but I've never been sure how to layer (even after reading tips and the help files). I thought that once you set all the drums tracks you want as "children" they all then become one track but it's not working.

On using layers:
add a layer channel
bring in on front (so you can see its buttons)
select all the drums you want to be children and press [Set children] on your layer.
Now they all should strike the same note when you strke that on the layer.
Go to the layer. You see the label [Layering] above the [Set children] and [Show children] buttons?
There is an arrow on the left of it. Click it. Select [Split children]. Now for every next note in the layer, a separate children channel is triggered. Try it.
Remember, the sharp (black) keys are in use also!

that works great, thanks.
One problem though, if I link the layer to an FX channel and add an effect like compression, not all of the track compresses, on a few sample like the snare and nothing else?

I think you cannot link the layer to a FX channel. Put the separate channels, the layer is there just for retriggering.

Or just route all the mixer tracks you want compressing to 1 track with a compressor on it.
Read my post at the bottom of this thread to see how it's done.

usually if you have them as childrne you would send them to one FX channle, or route them all to one channel after.

try editing the velocities of each hit.........
scale them up from quiet to full volume.
i have found it has more effect that way.
