i remember reading this a long time back in an interview.

if you have sampled a snare and the tail is cut off, try this:
1. copy a piece from the first half of the snare.
2. reverse the piece.
3. place it at the end of the snare. (try overlapping and mix a little)
4. fade out the piece to create a new tail.

the attack at the start of the piece is now at the end of the piece because you revesed it and will be not be audible because of the fade out. that leaves the resonance which is exactly what you need. the reverseing also helps to change the sound slightly so that the full sample doesn't sound like it's being re-triggered midway through the sample.

yeah i do all kinds of stuff. its a lot easier to do when you can see the sound waves of the sample, i.e. in acid or wavelab.
you can also add some (barely stereo, small room) reverb with an abrupt tail and see if that helps by itself, or use it combined with the trick above to mask the edit.
or you could just avoid those abrupt, crappy snare samples all together. i hate em. Big Grin
