ok, let me set the scene, i'm in cubase sx, i've got a snare track, a kik track and a ghost snare track. I'm using "dynamics" as a compressor can someone give me some advice as to how much compression i need on each and what nobs i need to tweak to achieve it. dont get me wrong i can get the tight snappy sound, its just my melodys seem to be clashing with my drums, maybe this is just bad EQing and if so could someone explain to me about that. KEEP THUMPING OUT THE TRUTH!!!

why dont you use kontakt and sequence your breaks in there, then compressing your drum track...

plus you prolyl have wayyyy too much compression on your drums.. a good way to test compression is to set your volume at a loud level, and listen for any "POPING" of sounds...not so much as clicks and stuff, but more or less very quick increases of sounds... such as yoiur melody...

then you knwo you have too much...

also its good to compress no more than a 3:1 ration... with maybe a max threshold of -4...

also with your melody, cut your frequencies in your drum areas around 2-5db depending on what they are, and how much your drums are coming out.. you dont want any masking...

what ive recently started doing is just compressing my master channel, as long as your drums in the original without the compression are nice and crisp, the compression on the master channel makes everything, not jsut the drums fat...

some people will argue not to...but to each is own really...

Or just use the multiband compressor to bring out certain frequencies to make it more punchy in the mix. Snares tend to cover a lot of frequencies, with the multiband compressor, you can solo each parameter and boost or reduce it from there.

Try it, it works.
