Do you have any quick techniques for grabbing sounds off of dvd's? Anyone know how to crack directly into the audio files?

Hi,
Great to see you on the site!
You say you work mainly with samples - where do get most of your samples from? Are they downloaded or shared between producers?
When it comes to mastering your track do you have a specific process or order in which you do things? Also any tips for eqing & compression?

The tramen is somewhat of a mystery to me. I know it's a tighten up ride and there's an amen in there somewhere. It's also very distorted. I imagine probably a noise gate might help you get it to snap a little better. Honestly, in this day and age I would still layer a kick and snare over the tramen. I like massive drums and that break itself doesn't do it. Awesome for a layer tho.

Since I (the butcher) am the most experienced of the three of us and the fastest at moving around in logic, I do the large majority of the grunt / detail work (preparing samples for use, mixing down, writing edits, making sounds, resampling through the emu). The other guys bring more of the creative aspect to it. They are the ones usually finding the cool vocal samples to use and giving a general idea as to where they think it would sound good. I'm typically the one implementing their ideas.
Our first release... well I had had releases in defiant way back before Gein was around. All I had to do was use my contacts from those days and send tunes out to the same people I was sending them to before... moving shadow turned out to be the first to pick us up for the Street Sweeper EP. Aim works wonders!
Thanks man glad you're feelin our shit!! :-p

Some are shared, some are made from downloaded stuff, some are synthesized, some are from sample CDs. Do not get me wrong, I have absolutely no qualms about grabbing someones break off of a vinyl (if it's totally open) and rearranging it / fucking with it to make it sound different. In my eyes, there is nothing wrong with that as long as you can mess with it in some way so that it isn't the exact same break.
Also there are a lot of records out there that are made for producers to sample that have tons of breaks on them (see paradox & asides).

Well, I don't have a whole bunch of expensive gear so to be honest beyond the mixdown that I do at the house, I don't master my tracks. I leave that for the vinyl lab. They have a bunch of gear specifically tasked toward mastering for whatever media the music is going on.
Prior to that however I do take off all final limiting / compression on the master output. Then I bounce the final as a 24bit Wav with -3 to -6db of headroom and burn to a data CD then mail it to them. From there usually they can make it sound good!

Not really a question, but much props for the use of Aceyalone - The Walls and The Windows in Onslaught. When I heard that my admiration for you guys went up even more. When I asked AbelGein, he led me to believe he was the one who found the sample. Why didn't I think of sampling it when I was going through A Book Of Human Language looking for samples, hehe.
Any oh yeah, you guys should release Rogue Trooper cause that tune kicks major ass.

heres a question actually: how do you write such fat tunes on a 1500 mhz dell pc?! There must be a ton of resampling. I'm running into cpu maximazation issues with my Athlon 4400+ dual core.
How often do you have to resample? Which sounds do you resample and which do you leave effects on live? I've found that with having a lot of effects on a synth (say lots of distortions and then a filter as the last effect on the chain) that when I export and import, the sound will not be affected quite the same.
There is tons of stuff going on in your tunes. How does your setup handle it all?

Hahaha... Sorry AbelGEIN but you must have been drunk when you said that 'cause that was my finding. It's all good tho that guy has found the main samples for at least a dozen other tunes.
Aceyalone is one of the sickest rappers of all time in my book. Book of Human Language changed my life for the better.
Rogue Trooper will never come out. Sorry.
If you can find it on slsk or anywhere else you're more than welcome to play it out tho!

I resample a sound as soon as I'm sure I won't be messing with it much anymore. All tracks end up being audio eventually.
Basslines I resample two or three times. Any more than that and you have so much going on in it sounds random or not precisely executed.
Drums I will have a whole seperate blank file for. Make my drums there then resample them and drop them into another blank file that ends up being the song itself. That way all the work of getting them to sound good is done beforehand and it's just a matter of mixing them with the rest of the elements
At the end the only effects left are typically an eq of some kind. All distortions are resampled. All filter sweeps as well.

I personally have been Djing for about 8 years, producing for about 6-7. I spend all week every week on tunes when I'm not playing shows. All my time is dedicated to music.
