Yup LFO does mean Low Frequency Oscillator. Basically its a slow wave which you can use to control different things. A good example would be the classic jungle sirens. Thats a saw wave LFO which ismodulatin the pitch of the main oscillators

contrarily i hate theory, but i think it would be helpful not to . . . i dunno exactly what LFOs do either so if someone could like concisely spell it out, or link us up to some not too mind boggling / boring long winded xplanation i for one would be very grateful.

yea techdiff explained it pretty spot on.. it is a control which oscilates (brings back and forth a value in a certain pattern and speed). to what you asign it to is important. that's where the fun part is actually, only your imagination is the limit. you can low frequency oscillate anything from sample start position, filter frequency and resonance values.. any instrument or effect device which has a control input

for example a guitar wah wah pedal uses lfo

I love LFO's!

My evolver has four of them & also four modulation slots so you can have 8 different parameters being modulated by LFO's at the same time!!

More often than not it results in freakin madness!

Modulating the speed of an lfo with another lfo is always good fun. Try it out! (Not all synths have that capability)
