Hi guys,
I'm trying to start a drum and bass night with myself and some friends Djing. Basically I dont have the first clue about designing flyers. They dont have to be anything dramatic, but the more professional they look the better.
So does anyone have any tips. What programmes are good for this sort of thing? I've used MS Publisher a few times and I've got access to Photoshop but have no idea whats going on with it. Are there any dedicated programmes or places I can get some nice templates from?
Thanks for the help. Hope we manage to buy a new server soon!

Well, Photoshop or Pain Shop Pro are top notch programs just for the cause. I, for instance, sat once beside my monitor and started doing shit in photoshop. Mind you, I'm a total beginer. The result was amazing! Pretty much more than I expected.
But you gotta ask this often: "Ooh, what does this button do?" and click it.

My personal flyer pet peeves:
Bad spelling
Incomplete Information
Hard-to-read text
I like the DOS look, but your background needs some work. One of my mates used to take a basic image and would (using Paint Shop) tile it, run it through a billion fx, fuck with the colour palette, etc, until it just became something totally abstract and psychedelic. That lightning pic would be a good start.

likin' the lighning theme
the flyer is stacked with text though, distinguish the important bits (date, venue, atrists) apart from each other, use smaller fonts for everything else

Flyer designing is pretty easy to do, but quite hard to get right. There has got to be a few things which will help it stand out from the rest. Places like London especially have so many different nights going on, its quite a saturated market. You need a way of making your flyer really stand out.
I think the first important thing is to have some sort of logo, or a signature text which you always use for the heading. This means that after a few nights, people will see the flyer and instantly know what the night is.
Second is clarity, people are put off by masses of text everywhere. You need to decide what text is really needed. You have to know what format your going for. If its a single sided print, dont be tempted to squeeze all the information on. Just put whats ireally important, ie. Name of night, where and when, entrance price, what kind of music. By doing this you wont put the reader off with masses of text, and you can have a really eye catching design without it looking crowded.
If your going for a double sided print, you can have all the extra information on the back, artists that are playing, a little description about yourselves. whatever. I think that unless you have some recognised people playing, there is no need to put their names on the front.
Other things that you can do are, changing fornt size to illustrate the importance of the text. Using old images to add some nice interesting details.
I think the best bet is to look at some other flyers and see which one grab your attention, and which dont. Work out why.
Finally when getting them printed, work out what size youre getting them printed in, and size the image down slightly. This will give a little bleed space so that if the ink bleeds (doesnt really happen) or if the flyer isnt cut properly (Happens far too often) you dont loose any information. You should be careful about not putting text too close to the edge.
Oh, and if you ever need some more people to play, look me up, Im always up for playing a set!

flyer is too basic , it doesnt stand out.
give the flyer a design equal to its purpose , cause now it looks like a computergeek gathering or something.
photoshop massive i'd say

Google have been sued by someone who owns the gmail domain. They were demanding a massive payout, which google refused to give. So now all new accounts based in the UK are at googlemail rather than gmail, which sucks a bit. Glad I got in there early!
Thanks for the advice - I'll keep you updated on progress. Still need a venue.

Yeah just outside. Takes me about half an hour to get to central London.
@Syneptic Those flyers are shit hot. It'd be nice to have the money to get a profesional designer to design flyers.
