I depends on the quality of the mic your using too. Sony make these little battery powered condensers. Theyre really cheep and pretty good quality. Ive got an Olympus DM 20 which works fine, you can set the quality you want to record in, set the mic level, and it also works as an MP3 player too. It was about £200 so its pretty expensive, but I take it everywhere and got some really nice samples from it.

Most voice recorders cut off everything above some 6KHz. Simply because they are designed to record a normal speaking human voice, not singing or crisp sounding samples with high frequencies. But If you would buy one, make sure you check the frequency specs.
Some usefull portable samplers/recorders could be: roland sp-303, or the new version sp-404, zoom PS-04, ...

mini-disc players are cheap in pawn shops because they suck for music.
they are still around and mini-disc are still for sale, because they are amazing for SOURCE recording. a higher SPL level then mp3 players g enerally meaning you can record louder stuff without it clipping, and you can get them to have ADACT which makes them record at 24-bit.
with a decent microphone, even just a cheap 100 dollar CROWN PZM mic, you can record great atmospheric sounds, which i do with my little baby.
since the mic is seperate from the machine, yo can always upgrade.
