Im well up for sending some money, probably on friday cause thats when I get paid, Im not exactly rolling in it, but I can probably afford £20 or there abouts.
As for the T-shits thing, why not use a high quality version of the header on the Homepage, and instead of sending a shirt, just charge a small amout for an e-mail of the picture file, then it'd be up to whoever to get it printed, but they could get it printed on whatever they want, mugs, mouse mats, shirts etc.

why do u wanna buy the server yourself and even buy licences for the hosting software ??
Renting a dedicated server is much cheaper and usualy backups are included in the service package or cost a few euro's more
eg: http://www.hetzner.de/rootserver.html
regarding the hosting software , there are even free opensource alternatives that are decent enough to use |
Price discussion is in this thread: can't connect to the forum

Those seem very cheap indeed. But as hosting goes: mostly the cheap hostings are simply crap.

Could be, I don't know them. But there's a big difference between breakz and drumnbass.be: we host tracks that generate huge amounts of traffic and serverload...

Indeed the forum only takes up 7% of the bandwidth on dnbbe. Track downloads take 65% and sample pack downloads 25%.
When the site just started we were on budget bandwidth, it didn't make much difference for the forum (maybe like 1 second more loading time) but the track downloads were very slow.

It could be I'm telling a huge bunch of bullshit right now, not sure cause I don't understand allot about servers ...
But you have a huge amount of members on this site ... but about 90 percent of these members never visits the site any more ... they use allot of space on this site don't they ? ...
Tunes that really suck ass and are downrated could be deleted too huh ? ...
I'm just saying, if you could delete all the bullshit on this site, allot of space would be free again ... or am I wrong ?
And also ... it wouldn't be a problem for ME, to start dnb.be all over again ... A fresh new start on a much cheaper server maybe ? ...
Don't get me wrong here this is just my opinion, I know certain people will disagree with me here, but it's just an idea ...
So if it would be up to me, I would exterminate and destroy all unneeded bullshit on this site and blow in new life ...

No, users take up very little space in the database. A few K's at most.

It's not the space tunes take that is the problem, but the serverload and bandwith they create when being downloaded. Old tracks don't get downloaded a lot, so thats not a problem. It's the new tracks that are the problem. But then again: that's what this site is about!

If you want to do it like it's done here
- Free demo hosting
- Fast browsing
- Fast downloading
then there's no cheap solution. That's the sad truth. Fast servers and fast connections cost money.

Yeah that's a common misconception, it's not the occupied space that costs money but the transfer. The space is cheap, just buy a new 160GB hard disk for 80€, put it in the server and you have room for like 20000 extra tracks and ten million forum posts.
BTW the previous server was not full at all, it still had around 40% disk space available. It was just becoming very unstable and it was just a matter of time before it would break down entirely.

one 30€ donation coming up, not much, but I'm still school going and I couldn't stand the thought of this site going down.
PS: I'll go the bank tomorrow

P.s. Why not build a 2nd rig and have ir running as a server and stick in a 100GB HDD, thats what I do. Infact I have a server running of a bearbones system lol.
p.s. That is 1000 euro a year isn't it? |
Space was not the problem, the old server was developing hardware failures.
Putting up a server cluster is not necessary in the near future
Maybe if we get like 20000 members
The 1000 euro we are gathering now is a one time investment, just to buy the new server. The hosting costs will as usual be paid by me, but they will be lower which is a very good thing since I was paying 1800 euro a year for the hosting. It's a bit steep just to keep my hobby site running you know.

So it's not that simple huh ...
pretty fucked up, money is what makes the world go around ...
I'll be honoust with you, I will not donate money ... Not cause I wanna be a jackass but just cause I don't have the urge of giving some ... and I'm saving for other things ...
It would be different if I knew evereyone better though ...
Hope you get this site tiptop fresh again ...
PS. Don't you think it's strange that a famous site like this doesn't have any sponsors??? With a few sponsors the money issue would be no prob !

Why don't you bring some sponsors then?!
So you say you can't give money until you know us, huh? I wish thechronic made that - made free access for only the people he knew... then here would be at top 3 members.
