Any fans of Squarepusher here? If so why do you like him? and if not why?
He's directly responsible for me getting into drum n bass, i just like his extreme techical ability and his ability to make songs of say, half an hour without missing a single beat.
ooo and another thing, does anyone have any production tips or tricks that can help me get sounds like his? im talking about the synthesised bleeps and whistles which are a hugely distinctive sound of his, i have made a song with something vaguely like the bleeps and whistles in it but its just a synth sound with automatic modulation on it so its completely random in the sounds it makes so the song's different everytime i play it in cubase or whenever i do a mixdown. this is probably the main thing i want to know i suppose: How can i manually do this so i can control what sound the synth makes as opposed to it deciding for me?
soz if this is in the wrong forum, but its sorta half suited for this and half suited for production hints :s
thanks guys!
btw If you guys are looking for a song by squarepusher which has an example of the bleeps and whistles in it then get his 2004 breezeblock set, and pretty much all the weird sounds from about 13:35 are what im trying to recreate so if anyone has even the vaguest idea of how to make them then it'd be much appreciated

one more thing, also in breezeblock at about 16:10 squarepusher has done some really cool things with the snare. now, is this just pitch shifting, or something else, cos when ive tried it it just sounds really messy, even when its a regular pattern and a steady ascension or descent with the notes... soz im a bit of a newbie lol

Yeah dude, theres loads of things you can do to get the Squarepusher style sounds. What programmes are you using?
A few simple things that he does are, automating the cutoff on a filter on a synth, opening up the filter quickly and at the same time sending the output through a reverb on a send channel. Also try puting stuff through a reverb which then goes through a HP filter and sweep the cutoff around. And for the sanre rushes, its just lots of short hits in quick sucession, make sure that all the notes are very short and dont run over each other, you also need to make sure tat the enelope on the drums is set so that there is no release on the hit. Turn the attack right down, and the release right down. Its also worth playing around with the velocities, pitch, and filter on the snare rushes.
It'd be a bit easier to help if you if you let us know what software youre using. Also, Ive been trying to find the Breezeblock set for a while. I heard it on the radio but havent been able to find it since. Anychance you could put it on www.Yousendit.com or something similar? You scratch my back etc.......

LOL, you'd be suprised, I saw a crackhead trying to dance to squarepusher.......wasnt pretty.
Squrepusher doesnt do anything like that and actually has released a few tracks ripping the piss out of skag heads and the like. Check out generation filth. I met him once and was quite suprised at how calm and sober he was, more geek than freak. I think his music is more of an attempt to fuck people heads, when I saw him live last year he'd play a few things that where obviously not supposed to be dancable and then laugh at all the coke fiends trying to dance to it. I reakon his music is only realy meant to be istened to sober otherwise you're just mising the point. Its like Free Jazz, everything is there for a reason, and although its sometimes complicated, its the almost cacophonic quality that really carries the emotion and drive of the track, its not so much as for dancing but listening, the fact that its kinda DnB simply means that its got more of an appeal to people, something farmiliar amongst the mayhem, I'd guess thats why he still uses the Amen breaks etc..
Either way, I fucking love it and I dont do crack

Was Burnin n tree the most recent thing you heard? That is a seriously old album, although it was released on warp at a later date, the original release on Spymania was long ago. His stuff has changed so much since then!
If you havent heard Go Plastic you gotta chech that out, probably the definative 'pusher album, Do you know? is really good too, but probably not the easiest to listen to. His most recent release Venus no17 is briliiant, especially tundra 4.
