If you're not going to make any profit of a remix, mostly the owners of the original don't mind you using it in mixes

the copyright is to who ever made the production of that sound, and whoever made the actual sound. melodies and lyrics are the real issue. beats are a little harder, but eccential all sounds from songs are copyrighted.
on a small scale 50 don't sweat it, nobdy will find out,a nd fi they do they'll jsut want money for the work,a nd it won't be taken out of anything other than what you made on the song.
i wouldn't suggest using it for anything else mind you. or at least ask them for an okay to just release around a bit and you'll give them credit for the orginal work. that will get you into the free.
if they say no release it anyway, claim you misundertood. if they didn't directly say it couldn't be used else where, and said you had permission to do what you want with them, it won't matter.
so basicly. check what they orginally said about the song, if you're worried, or ask them. i bet they'll say yes. in msot cases of copyright infringment, it's the label that is pissed off. most artist are more than cool with it. free promotion.
