The original Roland one? I'm not sure, but I think so. Maybe not for all sounds. I had a 909 emulator once that was 100% synthesised, except for the crash which was a sample

good question. now there ALL digital sample sof waveforms, in one shape or another. sounds like it's bassed off of simple waveforms and envolopes. don't see anything disproving that at all.
even if its not synthesizzing them up, it's a sample of a synth doing it i bet.

From what I found with a quick look at www.tr-808.com/ it seems that the sounds are generated with simple analog oscillators.
