Detuning can mean two things.

1. Detuning an instrument such as a guitar or piano or an oscilator or whatever means tuning it up or down a few cents from the original sound such as middle C so it sounds off-key when played against the original note.

2. Detune can also mean layering a detuned version ( up or down a few cents) of the original instrument under the original and playing them together, depending on how high or low the detuned note is, compared with the original note, this can make the note sound "fuller". It is also the sort of basis of how flangers work i think, when u add delay and other processing.

the basis of detune is that by playing the same note that is higher or lower, it causes phase shifting, like a flanger, or phaser. chorus works ont he princle of detune, in that when many people singe not everyone is dead on key, and this cause sthe sound to be layerd and thinkend. with synths it's perfectly off key based on the original note being played so it doesn't sound AS ful as with singers, because they don't stay always on keey, but even if they do it doesn't cause phase-shiftin because of different timbre of voices.

still it's the basis of it, you cannot have detune with only one note, it's a 2 or more voices thing.

the phase shifting causes certin aspects of the note to be louder or quieter, causing a warrble, again like flangers do.
