spyware is:

- software that installs on your computer without your knowledge
- software that collects personal information about you such as email adress, interests etc. and sends it to its creator. That information can be used to e.g. send you promotion emails with stuff you don't need (spam). The latest copyprotection from sony sends information about you to sony in order to log your (illegal) copying behaviour. That's why it has been identified as spyware by protection software specialist.
- a sort of spyware called adware that spits out popup windows wether you want them or not.
- Some of them install new search bars to your browser you don't want, change the results of search engines, ...
- They all take up a bit of your computer speed and memory and internet bandwith, so they will slow down your computer.

Normally spyware is not lethal to your computer, but for all the reasons mentioned above, it is better not to have any.

Ow yeah, most spyware and similar shit is programmed to work in internet explorer. So using an alternative browser such as firefox or opera will save you a lot of crap.

how can i identify spyware?

when i look at processes on my lady's laptop there is shit loads and i'm not sure what some are..........could they be spyware?

Could be, but they could also be system subprocesses, some programs use several processes at the same time, and the naming is mostly unclear. Some are browser plugins you won't even see in the processes window.

Best way to try to keep spyware away is to install a spyware remover like ad-aware or spybot search and destroy. Also most recent virusscanners such as norton or panda antivirus contain spyware removers. Be carefull when installing so-called spyware removers from companies you don't know. Some of them just install more spyware on your pc.

only one thing to do bout spyware to my knowledge
install hitmanpro wich is a anti-spyware tool (free)
an just click start (the prog works with scripts so u don't have to do shit until it says so (an even then it litterally says what u need to do))
go 2 http://www.hitmanpro.nl an download the prog
also spyware is not really harmfull for a computer but can cause u an increddible lag (slowing down of ur bandwith) due to constant uploadin (personal data) an downloading (advertisement)
only harm it can cause is when ur doin lot's of illegal shit(fxp,warez..) they can trace u more easily (it basicly just makes holes in ur computers defence)
another quick en efficient way to get rid of it is crap cleaner

there are loads of sites like for eg. http://www.processlibrary.com/ where you just enter the name of the process you're uncertain of in the box and it show information on it
