I'm in need of a (free) vst which can produce strings with a not too synthesiserlike sound (unless it's one producing those oldskool ravy strings)..
Anyone knows some good ones?

you mean orchestral strings? synthesizers cant really produce those without sounding synthesized.

the best you can get for free is an orchestra soundfont that flows nicely. there are a few orchestra "synths" out there that run on samples, where you can adjust the timbre, attack, decay, whatever, and itll load up a diff. sample.

but of course those cost some damn money.

some string synths that cost money but are ok are the AAS String Studio (really like it), and the Synapse Plucked String. but these are more like giving you the sound when a single string from an instrument is plucked, not the grandiose combination you're probably looking for.

reaktor's steampipe preset ensemble can create some convincing strings, but i think it would murder ur cpu.

hope any of this helps.

Sytrus has some awesome patches (orchestral and pads HQ!), if you're on FL...
