Drum machines/triggers |
|
instead of writing down my beats in the sequencer, I need something i can tap my fast beats out on because im spontaneous when i think of a good beat.
what does everyone use and would suggest in the way of drum triggers.
I have a budget, but lets forget about that for now.
if you have one or know of one that i should get then let me know.

M-audio has MIDI-drumpads (AKAI rip-off) AKAI as mentioned, has both MIDI-pad, or you could go for the sampler MPC1000 or MPC2000XL if you can afford it. Roland has some cheap electric drums with MIDI out if you feel like using drumsticks.

So, you have a Radium 49 huh? Use that!
Try which notes play which drumhits on your ReDrum, Dr. Rex or NN-XT (whatever you're using for your beats) and then try it a few times. Then record it while playing the track. Select the recorded hits and quantize if needed. You can still edit out anomalies afterwords.

We just set up a neat original drum trigger system for one of the bands I'm working for.
Ingredients:
- 1 Roland SPD-S sampler with external trigger inputs
- 2 large 200L oil containers, painted white
- 2 rubber damping pads
- 2 drum triggers
- 1 stereo jack connector and cables to hook up the triggers to the SPD-S
It works really well and it looks impressive since the guys are beating the oil drums with heavy wooden sticks.
Ofcourse you can substitute the oil drums with whatever you want, the drum triggers cost next to nothing (we got both for less than 15€) and they even work when you stick them to a table and drum on the table with your hands.
The SPD-S is rather expensive (around 550-600 euro) but there are lots of acoustic trigger to MIDI converters around which can be very cheap.

i realize that but hardware and software have their unique advantages and disadvantages. Wouldn't want the best of both worlds? I'm better at tapping out a beat than actually writing it down in notation

thats one of the first things I've tried, but you can't really hit a piano key like you can hit a drum pad. Although I do use this method from time to time

Thanks for the help, I'll check all of these out and see which one I like best. For the comment you made before this one.. I have no idea what that price would be in good ol' American $$$.

Oh yes, you can. But it aint easy. You just gotta practice a bit how to use your fingers as drumsticks on the keys
A friend of mine has gotten extremely good at that and wouldn't do it an other way.

Digi design and Pro Tools (digidesgin also) have came out with the greatest mixing board for live shows now, combing the best of both digital and analog. the mixer works without the OS, unlike every other digital board, but with the OS runs a moded Pro TOols, giving the power of digital with the reliability of analog.
that's the future for music

Yeah, Ive gotta get me some of those drum triggers. Alot of the time I'll be druming out rythms on a djembe, but It'd be so much easier to be able to convert that straight into midi data.
