its basically the kind of effect heard on the vocal on things like morning light, be there 4 u and a more obvious example is chers "do you believe in life after love" or whatever the shite is called. and before anyone asks no it is NOT a vocoder!!!!
its also the sort of thing that people like Kylie and the spice girls use when they "sing live".

For people who don't know what it is: a device (or piece of software) that puts your singing back in the right tone, so if your singing is a little bit off, it will still sound perfect. If your singing is a lot off, and you set the thing up right you can also use it as an effect (most known example of that is cher). Don't know any free ones though...

the Roland VariOS. pitch shifter/vocoder.
it maps out not only pitch, but timbre as well. you can play back any sample to any pitch, while keeping the orignal timbre and length. can play it like a piano.
sorta like a vocoder with the timbre shaping pitches. but kinda like a pitch-shifter that doesn't strech the timing.
this way any sample can play perfectly on pitch without even souding slightly auto tuned, because you COMPLETE remove the orginal pitch! it can do a vocal that's 3 octaves below, and the timbre doesn't change, so it just sounds deeper. nothing else because normaly the formant of vocals get screwed up beyond a few notes with most pitch shifters. this keeps most artifacts from pitch shifting out of there.
it's mind blowing how good it is. only uses the new apple format, which is better quality than mp3's but half the file size. treats each sample sepratly, instead of as a whole, so it allows you to treat sounds as a bunch of samples together, than as a long continuos stream.

the demo at the roland site gives sounds of this. there used as virtual synths the review says hmmm...
but check out the songs with it, they use the variOS ont he vocals, and give backup singers, that is the same chick, and it sounds like a guy singing int he background.

i don't know of ANY being free, and very few vst. Adobe Audition, is the closest i can thin of for free. Antaras Auto-Tuner if you can find it. other than that, good luck.
