Cheapest usable analog stereo comp is the Alesis 3630. I used to have a couple of these when I started out.
It's got the full feature set and sounds decent for the price. It has fully variable attack and release, hard/soft knee, ratio from 1:1 up to limiting, auto release function, stereo linking, peak/RMS level detection, a gate with variable threshold, a side chain and good metering. The ideal unit to get if you want to learn how to compress properly. It is not the most transparent compressor available but it's really an excellent little compressor for the price, and it looks nice too
It costs 111 euro, just a bit over your budget.

You want to master with THAT??
Mastering equipment is a bit in a different league! Start budget is 2500 euro for a stereo mastering compressor. A good one like a Manley costs around 4500 euro.
To get the basic equipment to do analog mastering would cost you around 10000 euro. If you want to do it properly, tuned rooms, reference speakers and all, count on 30000 euro minimum.
But let's not get offtopic. Buy the Alesis, compress your basslines and leads with it, perhaps a bit of percussion. Learn how compression works. Then get a good midrange compressor of around 500-1000 euro, maybe a valve one.

Well, I browsed for that one, they seem to have problems with compressing bass on DBX266XL, some clicks appear when people try compression on bass guitar etc.
People said that was the only prob. Someone even replaced their Alesis 3630 for this one, but I think that I will stick to the Alesis. Dunno actually...

i use the same thing, i enjoy using it, easy and cheap. try side-chaining your drums(solo the kick and toms) to your bassline. the two tracks will leave each other room to breathe, becoming more present without tuning the shit out of it.
