Easy:
- Download an IRC client like kvirc, visualirc, hydra-irc or mirc - (nag screen, not free, but most used client - don't understand why). You could also put an irc-client on the site (pjirc is a very good free java-based client for running on sites), but usually these only have a limited set of possibilities compared to normal clients. They are easy to use though... (more complete list of clients on wikipedia)
- Install the irc client, change your settings (nick usually is the most important thing to change
)
- connect to an irc server of a certain irc network (pick one, irc.krey.net, irc.efnet.net, irc.quakenet.org, ...)
- Join a channel, channel names start with '#' If the channel doesn't exist, it is created and you will be made operator.
Few remarks though:
- your channel is only known on that irc-network. A channel that is created on e.g. quakenet is not known on efnet. So you could, for example connect to irc.krey.net and join #drumnbass.be - and talk to the other ppl that are there. On quakenet though, #drumnbass.be won't exist. If you would join it, you would create a new channel, but won't see the ppl on the kreynet network.
Operators details:
- Ops are indicated by an @ before their nick.
- These can kick, ban, make other ppl operator, give voice to someone, or remove the voice or operator status from someone (including themself)
- Set topics
- Set special modes in the channel (+m - mute for example, then only ops and voiced ppl can talk on the channel)
- Banning someone does not remove him from the channel. He will not be able to say anything on the channel or rejoin it after he left.
- Kicking someone will remove somebody from a channel. When a ban is applied, they usually also kick the person.
When you get a voice, a + will appear before your nick-name, and you will be able to talk even when the channel is muted, and depending on the server/network when you are banned but not kicked from a channel.
Please note that the moment you leave or disconnect for whatever reason, you lose whatever status, being voice or operator, you had. This is usually solved by adding a 'bot' to a channel, giving this bot the operator status. Then you can configure such a bot to op certain ppl when they send their password to the bot using a private message. Certain IRC channels offer bots and global accounts for identification on that network (e.g. quakenet).
Some general guidelines and tips:
- Do NOT ask for operator status. You get it or you don't.
- DON'T USE CAPS - YOU WILL GET KICKED
- Don't repeat the same line twice (or more), even if ppl don't react (that means they dont want to react or are not able to react).
- Operators do not have to justify their actions (kicking/banning/...)
- Watch out with long copy/pastes. In channels this is not appreciated and you will be kicked/banned. In PM this can be usefull, but when a server detects too much messages from you sent within a certain amount of time - you will be disconnected with a message like "Excess flood".
- if you type something starting with a '/' - this is a command. Typing '/quit' for example exits your client. '/part' leaves a channel. Don't just type in things other ppl tell you to type, certainly when they start with a '/'. Other known 'newbie-traps' are ctrl and/or alt combined with other keys like F4 (quits your client - standard windows key-combination). Don't believe anything about pressing smth to get operator status or something special.
- Highlighting someone (saying someone's nick) can be usefull, but don't abuse it. If you do this too much with operators, they usually kick you.
- Your client might show smileys as graphics, but not all clients do. Typing MSN-smiley stuff usually is experienced as 'irritating', especially ':d'. Stick to standard stuff that is visible in text...
Few reads:
- Wikipedia on IRC
- irc beginners guide
- Bash.org - IRC quote database (warning: you WILL lose a lot of time when you start reading those, but some quotes are damn funny
)

Messenger is something completely different. On irc you can just enter the chat-room and join an ongoing conversation whenever you want. Messenger is more of a 1-on-1 conversation on a specific topic and someone has to initiate it. On IRC you can perfectly join and say nothing, until smth you think is interesting is said.

Well, it uses much less bandwith, that's for sure. I like the idea. BTW, there is a Firefox plugin which enables you to use irc through firefox, so ya don't have to use a sepparate client: ChatZilla
