I was just wondering who in here thinks its a good idea to auto mate volume levels of seperate track throuout a song to give the compression a nice sound?

Looking for a way to make the dynamics of a track sound a lot tighter and punchier with compression.

Automating track volume is fine, but worth doing without the compressor first other wise the actual volume shifts will seem unrelated to the amount of change you allow.
In terms of compresion, try using a multi-band compressor. This allows you to set a different compression setting for 4 different frequency bands. This works much better for mastering purposes than a normal compressor.

Look into Behringer's "Ultra Base". (Hardware). This thing is perfect for tightening up compression and it's not to steep!! Wink

how about dont bother cmpressing.......worry about getting your mix right first.....in fact dont put anything on the master channel.....instead pay for it to be mastered......believe me you cant compete.....and its not that expensive

Automating the volume of individual tracks is a basic mixing tool. It can really make the difference between a good mix and a top class mix.
